So I hopped out of my air conditioned truck into a howling wind & 35°C (95°F) heat to snap a shot of the Parting-of-the-Ways on the Oregon Trail (1811-69) in Wyoming. The right road cut 8dys off the wagon train's journey west but required enduring 80km (50mi) without water. About 2/3rds of the 400k emigrants who traveled the Oregon Trail chose the left road. The Trail has been variously called a linear graveyard & junkyard. Thousands lost their lives on their journey west.
