Linux Tech Tips just dropped a review of the Valve Frame—and it confirms exactly what I suspected:

This thing is a massive leap in VR technology. Valve has done what Meta, Apple, and Microsoft all tried—and failed—to do: make an actually good VR headset.

They pulled it off using camera-based eye tracking, wireless streaming, foveated rendering, and FEX—a project that ported Proton to ARM processors. Which, yes, means PC gaming now runs on Snapdragon chips. SteamOS has officially been ported to ARM.

His verdict? The industry should be terrified. And honestly, it should be. Facebook rebranded to Meta because it was betting everything on VR. The Apple Vision Pro was hyped as Cupertino’s next iPhone moment. Yet both fell flat.

Meta alone burned through $17.7B chasing this dream.

And now Valve—a company with only a few hundred employees—looks like the one that’s actually making VR happen.

This is nothing short of shocking.

@atomicpoet ok, so if FEX is open source and was made to run games on an ARM chip... where is the Mac version?? bring it on!

@tweak You would think! But Apple has never prioritized gaming and has often been hostile towards it. But maybe Valve can make it viable.
