ran my first one-shot of DH yesterday. it went pretty well, but the system design worked against me xD
during a fight against some pretty tough enemies the party kept succeeding with hope 90% of the time. i quickly ran out of fear, meaning the enemies just couldn't do anything as the party kept taking turns and attacking and succeeding with hope!
i started with 3 fear for 3 players, and during the whole session i only gained another 3 fear, for 6 total!1/2

i know i just got unlucky this one time and that at other times i might be maxing out fear constantly!
yet, this taught me how much the system and the narrative depend on the pure luck of the duality dice.
a super tough boss who barely gains any fear won't be so tough in the end. a weak opponent who gains a lot of fear might become an actual threat to the party.it's an interesting system! but i'm not sure if i like it or not. will need to play more!

@risa I had the reverse happen in a first session and had to make some narrative choices to avoid a TPK lol. It's not the typical result but it can definitely happen. Don't forget to gain fear on rests, and remember that you get to act on any failure from the PCs, even if they fail with hope, and even if you're out of fear.

@sandyarmstrong yeah, i know those rules, but they kept rolling really high with hope for most of the session. didn't even need a rest and almost never failed xD
seems like foundry gave them loaded dice somehow xDit sure was an interesting demonstration of edge-cases that can happen ^^
