Hallelujah, they’re actually going to re-release the original 1977 version of Star Wars theatrically in February 2027. Hopefully, they release it for the home market too so I never have to watch the special versions ever again.

@Tim_Eagon Hopefully we get a 4K UHD DVD release of the original version, so I too can ignore the reworked silliness.

@croyle Amen! I just watched the latest re-re-re-release with my 7-year old and I still cringed at all of the "new" additions.

@Tim_Eagon Hell yes, some physical releases would be nice too, then we wouldn't need the de-specialized editions anymore.

@68000 Yeah, if they don't release physical copies, the high seas will it be for me!

Star Wars is the only movie I've ever seen in a theater more than once. I was in middle school and I think I went three times. If it comes back, I'll almost certainly go again. Seeing it on TV is not the same experience.

@killick I wasn't even one when it came out, so I missed the original version in the theaters. Saw ESB and RotJ in the theaters though.

@Tim_Eagon Cool news, and I will never lament the loss of the cheesy special-effects add-ins. But honestly, Star Wars is a better film with the re-insertion of the scene with Biggs on Tatooine that made it into the special edition. I would totally accept an OG rerelease that kept that in.

@Tim_Eagon @croyle We really need Return of the Jedi too.

Somehow, The Empire Strikes Back is fine. The only pointless change I am aware of in that one is changing Vader's line when he goes back to his shuttle after the lightsaber fight. The original has more weight. (But the new one doesn't hurt.)

The only changes I know in the movie are the shot of the Wampa eating, and more looks at the outside of Cloud City, which are all good additions.

@yora @croyle I'd say that ESB's changes are the least bad, but all that extra Vader stuff in Cloud City throws off the pacing IMO.

I've come to the conclusion that I only want the original cuts; the other special editions can remain for those that want them.

@Tim_Eagon @yora You'd think that by now they'd just have a button to select "original/edited edition" at the main menu for the DVD.

@croyle @yora I don’t car about George Lucas’s thoughts and feelings on the matter; the original versions should have never been made unavailable
