    Here's a fun question. Astronomers have found that about once per century, sun-like stars are capable of blasting out immense superflares *thousands of times* more powerful than regular solar flares.

    So, um... can the Sun do that as well?

      @badastro thankfully, the Sun is relatively stable - even compared to others in its class. Also, we'd have to be pretty unfortunate to be within the solid angle defined by the flare. Having said that ...
