    found out about #Fluxer, another #OpenSource #Discord clone. caveat: i have not used it yet. but i know people may not be satisfied with #Matrix and/or #Stoat so this is another idea to explore

    some info:
    https://blog.fluxer.app/how-i-built-fluxer-a-discord-like-chat-app/
    https://github.com/fluxerapp/fluxer

    you can get the app at fluxer.app

    Haven't started using it yet, but what I know so far based on the blogpost:
    * it's #FOSS
    * the lead developer wants to implement #federation at some point (though Stoat's devs may also be considering that; I dunno)
    * the lead developer wants to implement public forum channels (addressing one big problem of organizations/devteams only using Discord as their public-facing thing)

    @glennmagusharvey the more I look at all these discord clones the more I think that the right question is not how but why

      @alexanderniki because Discord is enshittifying (and people aren't satisfied with the current alternatives)

      That said I don't think there really are that many of them. The only FOSS alternatives I know of that are actually close to what Discord offers are Matrix, Stoat (Revolt), and now Fluxer.

      And then there's non-FOSS alternatives like Slack and root, but they have basically the same issue as Discord.

      People sometimes talk about IRC, Mumble, XMPP, and TeamSpeak and Steam chat (non-FOSS), but I don't see them covering the same niche as Discord. And I say this despite being an IRC lover.

        Please let the “forum channels” be, uh, forums and not chat rooms. The lack of public access to Discord servers is a significant problem, yes, but it’s also a giant, massive issue that teams and organizations use an inherently ephemeral communication medium for long term information storage.

        @kichae
        Indeed, that is another major problem: that so many people seem to think that a chatroom with a persistent log is a substitute for well-organized documentation, or even for a FAQ. (Remember FAQs?)

          @glennmagusharvey @alexanderniki
          I suspect he's asking more why they already exist... and that's likely because a lot of people with technical knowhow and capacity for long-term pattern recognition saw this coming.

            I mean why don't you join in developing one of the already existed? Instead of making yet another one?

              @alexanderniki @glennmagusharvey
              Perhaps one doesn't agree with the development team's politics, or wants to prioritize different features than they do, or just doesn't hear about the *other* obscure marginalized project until *your* obscure marginalized project is a couple of years into development.

              Or, of course, there's the classic xkcd 927 answer:

                @glennmagusharvey more than you asked for but re fluxer I remain cautions: stoat gas been working on this for 5ish years... Fluxer has been around for months and floated a '499 for life' donation plan.

                Open source is a requirement yes, but I need to see a certain level of good faith effort before building a community in a new place.

                I get bad vibes but will keep an eye on fluxer, but am already testing stoat.

                  friend of mine made a server on fluxer so i'll probably check it out soon myself

                  (already have a stoat account so i am already familiar with it)
