@Tim_Eagon Yea, I can see similarities - with published D&D having an ongoing drive for the "perfect mechanic", when I think it truly is the sum of the parts that keeps me playing OD&D/AD&D after 50 years...

@chgowiz @Tim_Eagon Optimization hurt playing World of Warcraft back in the day. Instead of joining a raid and having a good time, people started analyzing spreadsheets and download mods to optimize damage, healing rotations.

@randomwizard Ha! That's right! I never played WoW, but I remember how surprised I was listening to that classic "Leroy Jenkins" video and hearing someone crunch numbers on the raid they were about to do... @Tim_Eagon

@tim_eagon@dice.camp As a data scientist, I can confirm that it's ruined a lot of other things, too.

The thoughtless drive towards optimization has also made the major Pathfinder 2 online communities absolutely intolerable, too. The worst part being that most folks in them don't realize they are power gaming, because it looks different in that game, and so present an incredibly skewed (and aliento me) version of the game to the world with a total lack of self-awareness.

At least 3e/5e power gamers know they have no chill.
