Seriously, though - what has been happening since 2020? I know it can get WAY worse, but so far we’ve had a pandemic, high inflation, crazy rent, crazy house prices, stagnant wages. Is this not already hardship not seen in generations?

Stagnant wages aren’t that new. 2008 was worse. The rest, yeah.

Hardships not seen in generations. I saw the oil crisis in the 70s and my grandparents were born in the great depression, fought in WWII and went through food rations.

Seems like the boomers just got an unusual reprieve from hardships that have otherwise been seen by pretty much every generation.

Fair enough I guess. Not once have I ever heard “Canada, be prepared for a bright future!”. Even way back when things were more stable (stability is a relative term, I know). Survival prep means shopping after all.

This trade war is not just a disagreement over trade policy. It’s a war of independence, and the US has decided that we should not be independent anymore. We’ve already ceded so much of our independence to the US over the last 40 years via heavy-handed economic treaties with purpose-built backdoors, they’ve decided we shouldn’t have any kind of sovereignty at all.

War is hell. War requires sacrifices. War is destructive. We’ve not actually signaled as a population that we are OK with the damage this war is going to do to us, and it’s not at all clear to us what is necessary to survive this attack intact, and what is just basic shock-doctrine exploitation.
