Borderlands 4 launches to 'mostly negative' reviews on Steam thanks to widespread performance problems and crashes

AFAIK: PROTON_ENABLE_NGX_UPDATER=1 doesn’t update the dlss version/dll files, just some game-specific profile settings. You’d still need to replace the .dll files if you want newer/different dlss files.
https://github.com/jp7677/dxvk-nvapi/wiki/Passing-driver-settings#ngx-snippet-updates-and-preset-overrides - at least the documentation here only talks about some snippets that envvar allows updating
Ah, I didn’t RTFM completely. I just read a snippet that mentioned the NGX updater and misunderstood the context.
I’ll give it a shot, thanks.

I am not surprised. I am thoroughly enjoying playing Silksong which I bought for less than 20 EUR, and I am looking forward to playing Borderlands for a few hours when it’ll be on sale for $5 in about a year.
It really shouldn’t surprise anyone, borderlands 3 had terrible performance and even with patches it still has many issues to this day.

tbh, I did the exact same thing, but came across that documentation today and realized my error…
hope it works!

And the hits just keep on coming for borderlands

As a fan of Borderlands, f- Borderlands 4. I’ve learned my lesson with things like Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands DLC. Even if it wasn’t the same studio, they do not have a commitment to a standard of quality to their name. I’ll let the “real fans” buy it up for over 100 euros so that I can go back and buy the complete with everything edition for 20 bucks several years from now, there are plenty of alternatives and even though I see the Gearbox witchhunts for what they are it still doesn’t make Randy less of an ass (I’m not looking to be a “real fan”, Randy). Also, the low fps is unacceptable for such an ordinary Borderlands looking game.
As an aside, I bought the Silksong game, and I’m not even playing it or am a particular fan of the genre atm.
You can say fuck on the internet

I was paying my respects.

seems like this is how most AAA game launches go nowadays
QA is just wasted money, you aren’t going to get more sales by having a functional game at launch. It’s best to release it as soon as possible then fix it if it’s successful.

Playing, on Linux (Arch, btw) with no issues. The defaults were a bit harsh (45fps@4k) but once I ran the graphics setting autodetection and it went to medium with balanced upscaling I was getting 60+ FPS.
I couldn’t connect to the matchmaking servers (my system doesn’t meet the requirements, apparently) but it otherwise ran just fine.
Elden Ring also ran terrible at launch so this is likely a Vulkan vs Directx thing.
I wonder if people on Windows (don’t be that guy) will use DXVK for this title as well.

So many envs and no central documentation makes it hard to handle for everyone.

Honestly, I’d bet money that the problem is at least partly Denuvo‘s fault.

I mean. Even putting all the borderlands expectations aside, it was a pretty low quality movie.
Like, a lot of films that are adapted from games or other media, if you set aside expectations from the original media, you at least end up with a halfway decent movie.
This one was just a train wreck all the way through.

I’m in this boat. I didn’t hate BL3. The story was meh, the antagonists were unlikeable, but they were supposed to be, so good job there. Overall, I enjoyed my time with it.
I tried to go back to BL1/2 and was hit in the face by all the usability issues, since it seems like they added mouse and keyboard support as an afterthought. BL3 is one of few borderlands games I can stand the UI enough to actually play.
My expectations from BL4 were/are small. Better mouse/kB support (or at least on par with BL3), and more story. I could give a fuck about the graphics, and most of the “loot” is randomly generated vendor trash. Unless it has a name and a gold title, most people couldn’t give any fewer shits about it. So all they literally had to do was mix up the gold tier weapons, and work on the plot line.
I see they fucked with the engine, otherwise it wouldn’t be so bloody unstable.
Oh well. I’ll wait for the goty/master collection/turbo Max ultra digital edition or whatever, that has the game and includes all the nickel and dime bullshit they’re going to try to get people to buy… Then wait for it to go on sale.
They’re not special. They’re going to end up enshittifying the game. It’s happening. I’m just going to stand on the side lines and watch.
-
I know I’m probably asking too much of a looter-shooter, but can we just get a new rendition of this game with the writers from BL2? Anthony Burch, where are you?
I’d happily jump on the “spiritual sequel” bandwagon if there is one.
BL3 was good enough as a technical achievement, with solid game-play and mechanics, but the story and writing just wasn’t at the same bar.

it gets weird when there’s multiple software layers. each one has their own env’s, dxvk, proton, nvidia, and then there’s the few random 3rd party ones (eg. libmimalloc if you want to tinker with memory allocation options)
it gets messy.
-
Hogwash. Its because there isnt enough skibidi toilet in the game

I noticed CachyOS’s wiki has a lot of the current relevant envs here: https://wiki.cachyos.org/configuration/gaming/

We were spoiled with actually good video game to film adaptations in the last few years. The Borderlands movie is like a step back to the 90’s when we got shit like Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter: The Movie. Except not even so bad it’s fun.

ooh, that’s a good list! Thank you for pointing it out! Bookmarked with violent intent.

I agree. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Doom movie. I’m not even sure what to say about that one… Maybe that it was so bad that I’ve forgotten most of it?
For good adaptations, Sonic comes to mind. Not perfect but Sonic games didn’t really have that much of a plot to work from, just dr.robotnik is bad, go fast to stop him from doing the bad things.
I’m certain there’s more that I’ve forgotten about than I could possibly list off the top of my head.
Though… Old school MK…
