I miss when buying technology meant you actually owned it. Now... Your car needs a subscription for heated seats. Your printer won't print black text because you're out of Cyan. Your OS serves you ads in the start menu. Your "Smart" home stops working if the company goes bankrupt.I don't need more AI features. I need "dumb" tech that just does what it’s told and lasts for 10 years. But where's the share holder value in that right?#RightToRepair #techbros #enshittification #privacy #technology #noai #electronics #linux #capitalism #windows #Firefox #writing #books #art

My 92 year old aunt: You do the Leenux thing, right? You need to come over sometime and install it for me, because f#ck all I ain't gonna update to Windows 11.Me: .... ?!#!?I explain what the change-over entails and that I generally don't recommend it just because...Aunt: No, f#ck that, f#ck capitalism, my laptop is still fine, so come over and set me up with that Leenux thing.#Linux #christmas

Eh, pls #boost my request to #getfedihired, if you could spare two clicks? 🥺 I've been humming and hawing about posting this, it feels strange, something about generational guilt & working class shame & ... but it's either this or start putting my CV through LLMs to include every buzzword on the listing I'm applying to. I haven't been able to stomach that, even though I presume that's a lot of my competition.I simply can't get to an interview. Historically, I've done three interviews and got the job each time, because I'm a real human being who is friendly and chatty and presents himself sincerely (or, that's my guess, anyway).#Christmas miracles appreciated! In #Ireland with my partner, but we've lived in different places and would move happily. I've a year experience doing an IT support role the last year, but have transitioned to this stuff later than usual. Before I've done: bartender; bicycle courier for Deliveroo in #Berlin for two years (best job ever); private tutor for five years in #Lyon (mostly piano but also maths, Irish, English, flute, tin whistle); bookies clerk for a short period; a few other odd bits - one highlight was writing reviews for a theatre company.Oh, very comfortably fluent in #French, pretty fluent in #Irish (my first love), and intermediate #German (which I would love to have a chance to go back speaking and learning).Tech-wise, it's been mostly on the #Linux / #Emacs / #Lisp side of things. I would happily work on anything that is one or more of challenging, interesting, useful, or moral.Money doesn't rule me. I want to live with a humane level of comfort, that's all.CVs and references available, DMs open. Thanks so much for any and all help!

Question for those administrating complex #Linux systems:From what I gather with my layman's understanding, it is possible to heavily automate patch management for #Windows servers with a #WSUS server. Are there any equivalent systems for Linux?

@audreygwinter It helps that I had an experience of having my distro have a very old copy of emacs and python in its store and I was forced to install both from the command line.It was just way harder than say, downloading an exe in Windows and double-clicking it. (Linux has gotten better with things like .deb files being able to do that, but FSF kinda does the snooty "just install guix to install emacs" route... which honestly had me checking if I could stand to go back to vim)

Dear #GetFediHired,Despite “my” contract ending with the end of the year, but the company being a side in that contract decided to kick out some people, including me, earlier. So their Christmas present for me is the lack of a job.So I'm looking for opportunities for a jack of all trades #Linux sysadmin, with broad, 10y+ experience in system and applications administration. Preferred location would be #Strasbourg. Please boost

hey, Linux boffins, a request: we want a book.we know how to use a computer. we know how to crack open a wiki. we know how to structure a web search. but when it comes to Linux, we're missing the *basics.* the bits that don't go in the wiki in the same way that *how to use a mouse* doesn't go in the wiki, because why would you explain that.is there a book we can get – from our local library or said library's Libby subscription or, idk, the archive dot org anization or whatever – that can shore up our understanding? like the catalog lists book titles but we don't know how to judge them, so we'd like to be able to just type a title *y'all* name into the box and see if it comes up.- ? ?#AskFedi #Linux

@lnklnx Wow, thanks for the effort!("Streaming on #Peertube " is also one possible use case for me, so I am glad to see that that works with Linux as well. Though I had assumed that to be the case.)

Okay. So. I guarantee you that most Windows users—especially ones on Fedi—know how fucked up Windows has become. Bombarding them with "Install #Linux, we have cookies!" propaganda isn't going to send them rushing to download an image and flash it to a usb drive to install. They know Windows is a nightmare, they want the nightmare to stop. But there are a lot of reasons stopping them from installing Linux. One of the biggest ones is that even as Linux has gotten easier and easier to install, it's still a really big step for a lot of people. Maybe they only have one computer, and can't risk slagging it if they mess up. Maybe they don't even know where to start backing up their data. Google and the other search engines are returning AI slop, so they can't trust those to give them accurate and useful answers. So instead of trying to convince them they want to switch, we need to help them find the resources necessary to do so if they decide they're ready. We need to be the opposite of all those fucking RTFM bros that made it hard when we first switched. We need to make sure they can find a helpful community to give them the support to feel safe in switching.Because yeah, Windows fucking sucks. They know that, we know that. But breaking their computer so it works even less is fucking terrifying, and Linux has a fucking PR problem because the RTFM bros are the loudest members of our community.

@squishymage42Yeah, anything can play well with Nvidia, but Pop and Mint are probably the two that make it easiest.I've been on OpenSuse/KDE for a couple years, and have been so happy having made the change. Best of luck!

There's a growing movement on the #fedi that wants people to switch away from Big (US-based) Tech and towards #FOSS alternatives like #Linux, alternatives to #google, #Microsoft, #dropbox etc.For #screenReader users, that might not be as simple as all that due to #accessibility reasons. This weekend's IC_Null stream aims to dig into this, but I need your help. What tools, services etc. should I look at from an #accessibility perspective? Anyone here who needs their tools evaluated? Anyone here who's curious about a particular tool or suite of tools? Let me know and I'll add it to the list. Anything goes. #selfHosting #blind #tech #EU
