“This website I’m quoting from, I don’t know a whole lot about… but I just thought their words were better than mine.”— Alberta councillor, citing a website with an AI chatbot pushing towns to quit net-zero programs

Misinformation-laden website almost convinces Alberta town to abandon climate program

The town of Cochrane, Alberta, came within minutes of withdrawing from a national net-zero framework based on arguments from an AI-powered misinformation campaign uncovered by Canada's National Observer. A last-minute move by the mayor put the brakes on the decision — for now.

The problem is not artificial intelligence, it’s natural dumbness.

That misinformation is amplified by an AI-powered chatbot named “Canadian Civic Advisor”.

I’m going to take note of that example. Next time I hear someone says AI chatbots could potentially help fight climate change, I’ll be able to show that today they actually aggravate climate change.

The AI lies are one part of that.

The other part is that the data centers powering these AI tools draw massive amounts of power and need massive amounts of water to keep them cool.

Once AI is better and wipes life out on this planet then yes it can help with climate change!
