Why did The Walrus outlet accept this sponsorship?

They have enough number of readers to do the right thing.

JFC, a new low for The Walrus.

I donate monthly, but will pause my donations for the rest of the year and I sent them an email explaining why. I hope this partnership costs them dearly, though of I course I hope they survive it and learn the right thing from this.

They’re only doing it cause almost no one wants to pay for the news.

Then again, so many of them make it painful; I bought a sub to the Guardian a few years back and my reward for that was to get even more popups telling me to subscribe to additional features.

Naturally, to cancel it, you have to call someone in the UK during their business hours.

That’s why all these megarich assholes own newspapers and media companies; it’s a cheap way to establish narrative control and kill off independent media.

I think having a nationalized media funding like we do now is probably the best option for journalists to earn a living whithout having to chase views or dubious sources.

They should also have a somewhat open process where people make complaints about places like Postmedia which would result in loss of those funds.

Funding a organization the regularly makes things up or just posts tabloid level stuff is just awful.

Our local news outlet is FULL of sponsored articles from casinos. It’s gross and turns me off from their platform.

If you’ve got to use ads and sponsored posts, at least feature wholesome local businesses.

But the local business can’t afford what the casinos can. Aslong as they are able to make $$$$ they will beat out anyone unless rules change.
