    Byline:

Linda Royle says airline initially wouldn’t compensate because she can’t prove ownership of missing items

    Excerpt:

When Linda Royle opened up her returned carry-on suitcase, she was disgusted to find not only her personal possessions missing, but several items — like two toiletry bags, a ticket scanner and a knife — were now in her bag.

Air Canada initially refused to compensate the Newfoundland woman, but told CBC News in a statement Thursday that it had looked at her case again and would contact Royle to “finalize her claim.”

In an email, which CBC News has reviewed, Royle was told by baggage claims representative Dana Esteban on July 5 that because Royle didn’t have receipts for the items she claimed were missing, Esteban couldn’t confirm she owned the items.

CBC News asked Air Canada for an interview about Royle’s case. An unidentified spokesperson replied to that request, asking for more details.

Two days after the CBC News request, Royle was contacted by a company representative who said her case had been further reviewed.

In a statement to CBC News on Thursday, Air Canada said it requires customers to provide claims, through receipts, for items valued above $350.

“Our baggage claims team re-looked at this case and found that the individual items being claimed were under the threshold,” it said.

The spokesperson then told CBC News over email its security team is reviewing Royle’s case.

It’s frustrating that you have to go public to get these companies to do the right thing.

The number of “abandoned” bags I see piled up at Pearson is atrocious. And now they’re punishing us by charging for carry-ons when they can’t properly handle checked bags.

Hahaha of course I have fucking receipts for everything I own. How do they even prove it was in the bag to begin with?

Pearson is one of the worst airports I’ve had the displeasure of transiting through

I definitely have my receipt for this 77” OLED TV that was absolutely in my checked bag, and is totally missing now.

The ridiculous part is there’s absolutely security footage of them with the bag; that can be easily found by cross referencing when they checked in or entered the security line up.

(Y’all get your tickets scanned right? Hard to tell what modern shit is standard or just standard outside USA)

True but even then it was a carry on bag. Meaning it goes through that conveyor belt scanner with the TV screen everyone can see. I would very surprised if they are not backing up the footage from the scanner either directly or indirectly via CCTV, for liability purposes. That would verify the contents she’s claiming.

Then there’s the knife she found inside. That alone should prompt a full chain of custody investigation. If her bag wasn’t tampered with; how did she get a knife onto the plane?

Those x-ray machines don’t record video?

Fair points. Only thing I would question is if they are backing up the x-ray video feed, that’s an enormous amount of data, and I would bet their backups don’t go back very far.
