I’m curious if anybody knows here since Lemmy is full of privacy and tech whizzes. If someone were to travel for work and had to take their work device and that person worked for the government or other equally classified entity, would the border patrol still be able to review all that? What about like medical records covered under PIPEDA/HIPAA?

The article simply says “yes they can search your electronics” but wouldn’t gov classified info be covered more securely under some other law?

I’m not going down there, just a thought that came up reading the article.

I would hope no one crossing the boarder would carry any of that stuff on their devices across the boarder (without a diplomatic pouch or equivalent) any time, I could not say the same about that today. I would hope that any of that important data would be separate and under further encryption, with fail safes to protect it.

With the current state of their air traffic controls, I want at least a few months of accident free travel before I even fly through their airspace to go to Mexico.

Fortunately we have a few years before our 10 year anniversary when we plan on going south to celebrate.

Ha, Trump ain’t stepping down I will be surprised if their midterms happen! Even if their midterms happen do you think that will mean anything?

I am making the choice to not cross the border at all. If I was required to for some real reason, I would bring one of my old phones SECURELY wiped (as in, writing over all the old bits on the flash storage), with nothing but the absolute essentials installed and NO accounts.

Is it schizo? Not anymore. They’re detaining everyone and deporting/disallowing you in the country for ANYTHING now. JD Vance memes will get you banned at this point.

Mark my words the first person who actually does that is going to Florida to live in Alligator Alcatraz.

After Carney and Trump’s 30 day trade negotiations are over I am thinking more Canadians are going to get a free trip to Florida, when they cross the boarder. That trip is not going to be relaxing in any way, they will have to hope to not be eaten by alligators when the wind blows a little.

Imagine if you had a meme of Trump on your phone rather than Vance, with the latter you get sent home with the former you will get a free trip to Florida to enjoy alligator Alcatraz.

There are similar guides from other organizations as well, if anyone has a link on hand

I hate to say this but don’t come here. There is no reason to put yourself in danger. I mean there are Canadians in causticity right now and your government is doing fuck all to get them back.

Protecting your phone, your privacy and yourself in two simple steps.

Step 1: Stay out of the fascist hellhole. Step 2: Enjoy a cold Canadian beer.

I keep thinking if my employer would force me to go … can’t make me. Fire me over this and we see what the court says. Either way you can’t kidnap me and drag me to the airport and put me on a plane. So I won’t be going. Ever again.

There’s a really good chance I’m going to have to go to the States for something important and unskippable. I am truly hoping arrangements for said important thing are made on this side of the border, but chances are slim and I am very nervous…

Yep, I don’t see myself going to the U.S. again in my lifetime, and same, I’d get fired before I’d cross that border.

US border patrol gives no shits about most laws and international treaties. Supposedly they are conducting a reasonable search there, so if they unwittingly encounter classified information in the course of that duty, they most they might need to do is report it.

Anecdotally, I have heard cases of some workers bringing a fresh laptop through the border, then re-imaging it with their files after. This is probably what government with classified files, corporate agents holding trade secrets and diplomats with sensitive info need to do.

Oh he knew. But he’s also the kind of person who would know how to put up an image when he needs to, and I’m sure he knows how to not prod at tigers (even if it’s just a kitten pretending to be one). There’s some sliminess in him and he knows how to slither his way around things that are potentially dangerous to get what he wants, though at least he doesn’t go around hurting other people.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’d be a slight recovery in tourists at all, especially if the negotiations appear to be somewhat smooth.

This chat with my colleagues about the situation down south and what they’ve been doing with regards to the state just sort of revealed to me that while there are people like us on Lemmy that are repulsed by what’s happening there, there are also people who have closer ties to the US or have frequented the US who try to find ways to tell themselves that they themselves should be fine crossing the border, as long as they get rid of things on themselves that would upset the orange down south. For those with family, I get it. But for those who’re still doing it for leisure, it’s rather clear from the way they’re putting it that they prioritize their own lifestyle over politics, which, tbf, we all have different lines that we draw on that.

Sorry for making a comment that seems impossible to reply to, but I just needed to get that off my chest.
