The Liberal government introduced legislation Friday that it says will eliminate federal barriers to internal trade and detail how nation-building infrastructure projects will be identified and approved more quickly. The One Canadian Economy Act attempts to fulfil campaign promises made by Prime Minister Mark Carney to strengthen Canada’s economy and sovereignty in the face of the economic attacks on Canada by the Trump administration. The bill only recognizes provincial standards at the federal level. Workers certified or licensed in one province that want to work in another will only be able to do so when that province or territory agrees to drop their trade barriers.

I’m sure more details will emerge, but: Under the legislation, someone who is certified or licensed to perform specific skilled work in a province or territory that wants to take on a job doing the same thing for a federally regulated project will be deemed to have met that federal standard. The government says recognizing provincial standards will open up job opportunities to workers and give employers a larger candidate pool to draw upon. The bill only recognizes provincial standards at the federal level. Workers certified or licensed in one province that want to work in another will only be able to do so when that province or territory agrees to drop their trade barriers. The federal government has rules and standards for businesses on top of regional requirements that apply across provincial and territorial borders. Under the legislation, provincial standards for goods and services will be recognized as having already met federal standards. That means a province’s organic standards for food, or energy efficiency standards for appliances, will be treated as having met federal standards.

It’s still way more public here than in most provinces. Or at least, moreso than Ontario and BC.

I am Canadian. I want to build a mine somewhere else, let’s say Finland. I’m going to build it where no one lives, so I don’t impact anyone’s home. I’ll apply my own laws on the site, even if they contradict Finnish law. I’ll totally promise to clean up everything and restore it to what it originally was when I’m done. Do you think Finland would be totally cool with that? These Bands are effectively sovereign nations, though nearly all of their lands have been seized, their communities displaced to wherever their conquerors wanted, stripped of their resources and culture, and yet, not only do you call them tyrants, you question why they want a say in what happens on what little land they have left.

I’m really getting sick of politicians wanting to make places into an “economic powerhouse”, or “energy superpower” and I wish more people could see through these terms to what they really mean: more money for the politician’s friends with already deep pockets, more destruction of nature, more pollution.

Maybe people will start taking our other trade agreements more seriously now, like CETA and CPTPP. I mean it’s hard to believe somebody would castrate themselves business-wise as thoroughly as Trump and co has, Russia couldn’t have wished for a better bunch of idiots, and we all saw it in slo-mo. A hard lesson for Canada, everyone saw the orange mudslide coming but did little to nothing to mitigate the incoming catastrophe. Carney and the band better don some of them banker top hats and pull the bunnies out screaming, or we are screwed. Not looking forward to the pain. Elbows up, we’ll survive this.

I suppose yes there are a sizable portion of First Nations Métis and Inuit that want nothing to do with the Canadian government. But I do think there are legitimate pathways to partnership with willing communities, that can involve a mix of Eurocentric and Indigenous culture and technology. It would be in First Nations communities’ interest to seize upon this moment as much, if not more than your average Canadian. I think Canadians have brought in a government on the premise of being constructive and collaborative with Indigenous partners as part of speeding up projects, but that predicates on the government holding up their end of the bargain for accountability, due involvement and both the prosperity and burden being shared. As an example: Look at Air North. The Vuntut Gwitchin people around Old Crow, Yukon had brought their community together to invest in Air North, allowing them the purchase of passenger jets enabling access for southern Canadians to the North, better access for Northerners (Indigenous and not) easier access to urban centres and its goods and services, and easier access for Northern Indigenous comunities that have no permanent roads or no roads at all into them. And not the least, as 49% shareholder the Vuntut people get a big chunk of the profit. That’s a win, win, win, no?

On May 2, Health Canada announced a recall of Arooj Henna Cones due to a chemical hazard, as the product may contain phenol, a prohibited ingredient on Canada’s Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist. “Phenolic compounds are known skin sensitizers and can produce chemical burns (corrosive action) to the skin,” reads the statement. “Immediately stop using the recalled products and dispose of them in regular household garbage.” According to Health Canada, as of May 27, one incident has already been reported due to the recalled product.

Carney is effectively a moderate conservative, which is what a lot of Canadians have wanted for a long time. I’ve said it for years - the first party to field a moderate conservative that isn’t a total lunatic will sweep elections. And I hope the fact that it was the LPC to do so rips the CPC to pieces. I’d love to see that party split again. Their stubborn backing of a mini-Trump cost them one of the most historical election leads in Canadian history.

The law seeks to speed up the building of large projects, particularly mines. First Nations are livid about the new law and say it tramples their rights and ignores their concerns. As well they should be. Hopefully they take Drug Fraud’s gov’t to court and this ends up in SCoC … where DF will lose.
