Frankly, a lot of Europeans and Canadians talking about Trump's obscene threats of violence seem to be reacting with shock that he is threatening to do to white people what the US already does to brown people in other countries.

It wasn't okay before either. America loves to start wars & kill people, & that's BEEN true.
But frequently it was in browner parts of the world, & frequently it was *with the help & cooperation of your governments too*.
You draw the line at Greenland, huh?
Don't talk like Canada hasn't been a faithful helper in American Imperialism.
No, it's not fucking right, the threats being made. And guess what? I have Canadian family going back literally hundreds of years. I think I actually qualify to be a Canadian citizen myself (gotta get that taken care of). I'm not hating on Canada.
I'm just saying, colonizer nations aren't innocent. Period.

@artemis oh yeah this is absolutely a large scale case of “until it happens to white people”
-
"well, I'm a Canadian, & I never supported our participation in xyz."
And I'm an American, & I don't support our bullshit either.
That's how it works. Our governments make us feel as though we have choice through voting, & then we are supposed to sit back & let atrocities happen, because "we'll vote them out next time."
I agree: you aren't guilty for the things you don't have control of. But we all have a responsibility to try to prevent harm & promote justice.
So let's stop trying to decide which genocidal imperialist nation state is the worst, & let's start trying to get rid of all of them.

@artemis right? Canada has so much indigenous blood on its hands, just as much as the US does

nobody is really "doing better", some are just "doing less bad"

@artemis I do think that people have a limit as to how many things they can loudly and truly care about.
For me, it was how we treat indigenous peoples in Canada. Then Ukraine, and Palestine.
And now? We're a bit overwhelmed with the one country who has the most power in the world and wants to start WW3.
I think it's human also? We're all a bit selfish. Doesn't mean we forget our own shortcomings.

@stephanie
Yeah, I'm frustrated with something specific & trying not to hit anyone with strays here, because emotions such as anger, fear, and definitely overwhelm are certainly justified.I have felt like some people are getting drawn into nationalistic narratives where there are "good guy" nations & "bad guy" nations & losing track of things like the fact that people are not represented by the oppressive regimes which rule over them.

@artemis Oh! If that's what you mean, then yes, 100%. I totally agree with everything you said!
(that's also human, we all feel targeted no matter what
especially when we're all scared and tired) -
So let's stop trying to decide which genocidal imperialist nation state is the worst, & let's start trying to get rid of all of them.
By the way, nothing I say in frustration about the nationalist/jingoistic narratives some people are building should be taken as me saying it is fucking okay that Trump & his cronies are threatening to start wars everywhere.
Or that you shouldn't be angry or scared or whatever you are feeling.
None of this is fucking right or okay & you don't have to pretend like you're fine. Very few of us are fine right now. I don't know anyone who doesn't have at least a light layer of simmering rage.

@artemis nationalists prefer butting heads over whose dad can beat up whose dad.

It's weird.
The United States actually kidnapping the president of a sovereign nation and his wife gets less outrage than just talking about invading Greenland. You can say "but Venezuela isn't in NATO" and, sure, that's true. But both are the same thing: greedy resource grabs with no consideration of consequences by a wannabe dictator who does not believe in any rules other than his whims.
The United States loves to topple democratically elected governments and normally had broad support from the superpowers that matter.
But going after white people?
That's too much.
"Stand down, sir! You are embarrassing the alliance."

@chirpbirb @artemis yes! And right now the liberal government is attempting to pass anti immigrant bills left and right. And they were so proud of their efforts at deporting, denying entry and visas this past year (I think about 19k total) they put that up as a positive thing on our government website — https://www.canada.ca/en/border-services-agency/news/2025/12/cbsa-is-strengthening-the-border-2025-results-and-accomplishments.html
We gotta stop pretending like we're not on our own path towards the same goals.
