@juergen_hubert golems. They can last for eons. Not suitable for low level parties though.

@juergen_hubert Gnolls. Theyd eat anything.
Mimics, of-course.
Goblins, in a cargo-cult sort of way -

@juergen_hubert demons and undeads are always there for you!
Barbed devil is associated with greed. You can say that mummies are also associated with greed. -

@juergen_hubert Diety of greed? The temple could be littered with treasure chest mimics.

@juergen_hubert Always love a good old fashioned gargoyle.

#DnD question:
Can you recommend any suitable creatures which would guard an otherwise long-abandoned temple to a deity of greed?
@juergen_hubert possibly a dragon, given their tendency to hoard. Imps, lemures, and other devils associated w/ Minauros, the part of the Nine Hells devoted to avarice. Undead of various types work too.
I’d avoid golems because using a creature from Jewish folklore to inhabit a temple of greed looks super bad.

@juergen_hubert Besides the obvious "dragon" I'd suggest "priestess cursed into darkness" medusa, perhaps.

@juergen_hubert Nothics. They're like the Smeagol of greedily seeking magic. -

@juergen_hubert I'd say something with a big beak.

@multipass Hmmm. A shadow dragon might be appropriate to the general region (a sunken city associated with shadows and ash). But the party consists of 3 level 7 characters - so an adult shadow dragon (CR 13) would be too much, and a juvenile shadow dragon (CR 4) would be far too weak.
Does anyone know of some methods on how to "downgrade" creatures in #DnD 5e?
