Hi, the Mastodons.

Hi, the Mastodons. I don't know how this works yet or how active I'll be here, but I thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm a UK-based female AuDHD adult, choosing to remain mostly anonymous. I'm really just curious about how the Fediverse works - I can be ambivalent about social media but I thought this sounded refreshing in contrast to the big, powerful platforms which feel scarier to me by the minute. I've also been getting to grips with Linux recently, and am thinking about other ways within my limited means and courage to try to be involved with more of the small things that are about moving away from exploitation and towards caring for each other.
Take care out there

@MelodicDinosaur Welcome to the Fediverse. Mastodon might be just the place for you. Take the time to search for and follow users and hashtags that you're interested in as it works best once you've curated your feed. Also don't be afraid to boost things as this also helps with engagement.
From my experience so far, Mastodon is a pretty inclusive place with regards to neurodiversity and nerdy stuff like Linux etc. That could also just be my personal experience based on who I follow, but I'm sure you'll find some engaging topics.
You basically get what you give so don't hold back.

@MelodicDinosaur it's a pretty good place, poke around, follow people, search some #tags . No algorithms makes it so you need to put in some effort for it to be very good, but it keeps a lot of garbage off your timeline.

welcome, you'll find this a refreshing place & while (alike any public space) there are still some idiots, for the most part this is a civil & enjoyable place to be - conversations with those with whom you differ are always interesting, and in my experience civility has won out here.
Enjoy your new social media experience
@ChrisMayLA6 Thank you! I'd like to be part of conversations and disagreements that are in good faith.
-
Welcome. Nice to meet you.
You put me to shame - I've still not done my introduction...
Or have I? I forget. I wrote something pretty uninformative a while back.@OneInterestingFact Hello! LOL, I sort of really didn't know what to put, but it's been a nice surprise how friendly everyone has been!
-
@MelodicDinosaur You sound like a good candidate for enjoying the space here. I hope it suits you. Welcome!
@iris Oh, thank you! I hope so. Everyone seems lovely.
-
@MelodicDinosaur hi. You're welcome.
Post a lot of cat pictures and nobody will get hurt.
(And today is #caturday , take advantage of it!)@gmarcosanti Yay, Caturday!

@MelodicDinosaur @Tionisla Welcome!
You'll find all sorts of people here. You thankfully also have a set of very good tools at hand:
Follow, mute, and block like the functions were free (because they are) and you will be likely to end up with a feed full of interesting and likeable people.
As for AuDHD and Linux this is definitely where most of us are these days.

@autisticplushy Hiyaaaa

@MelodicDinosaur
There are a lot of people that don't know any more about this place than you do who are still good people and would like to talk to you. There are a lot of people who are involved in various Linux projects that would be happy to help out if you get stuck somewhere. Welcome to Mastodon. -
@MelodicDinosaur
wilkommen, bienvenue, welcome...Am new to Linux as well... big tech is big brother.
@DonChacale Thanks, Don. How are you finding it so far? I think I've just about got the hang of, like, GitHub, and the thing where you can make the terminal do a bonsai tree - so, the important stuff...

@MelodicDinosaur Welcome! Find some hashtags to follow and start your own algorithm. It's pretty cool here.

@billstatler Hello, random person. I hope you're well. I'm open to sporadic chatting if you'd like to, or not, if not

-
@MelodicDinosaur do you know about hashtags around here? The algo is chronological so tags are very helpful. Such as #actuallyAutistic or #AuDHD . There are a bunch of great weird ones too, #lichensubscribe (for lichen pics), #asstodon (donkey pics), #caturday (which today is). Check out @FediTips if ever you feel lost

Damn. The lichen people got to her first.
(It's either lichen, cats or sourdough around here. Pick your tribe.)But seriously, welcome on board - great choice of server, you won't get flooded with shit on there!
My unasked-for advice - if you find that you've followed someone who floods your timeline you don't have to unfollow or mute them - you can also just turn their boosts off (if that's the problem) or if it's more a verbal diarrhoea thing put them in a list of their own.
Have fun. And stay away from the lichen freaks.

-
@MelodicDinosaur welcome welcome:) and good luck on your fediverse journey.
If anything there are *too* many people eager to talk about Linux on here, but... maybe thats a good thing?

There are definitely many people willing to engage on how we can make everything less awful, and that is unambiguously a good thing
@abs0 Oof. Why didn't I come sooner?
