@Faintdreams I'm watching https://stoat.chat and https://fluxer.app, both of which have active communities and are in heavy development at the moment (mobile apps pending!)

@Faintdreams Stoat has more contributors and has been open source for longer, but seems to have stalled in development due to lack of dedicated resources. Fluxer is being developed by one person at the moment, who has a LOT of experience with Discord, and has a lot of funding from the community (they're pursuing a premium features model on their central server). It was published to github on Jan 1
Both projects plan to offer self-hosting and federation between servers

@Faintdreams The one I'm currently using is Matrix Element; the encryption can make things wonky and you can't stream programs over it, but otherwise it works fine
