He is *ragingly jealous of geeks and nerds*.
He can't really pull off being a geek or a nerd himself, but he really wants nerd/geek cred *badly*. He doesn't just want to be seen as the genius he's clearly not, but specifically as a geek/nerd.
I am pretty sure Elon Musk is the only billionaire in the world who, fundamentally, *wants to buy being a nerd*.

@pteryx He was the young dweeb who was never invited to the gaming tables because he was too much of a basket case even for the roleplayers (and I'm talking about times when roleplayers were mocked as freaks EVEN AMONG OTHER NERDS, thus the subculture was comprised of the rejects' rejects).
