I must admit that the response to that Quinns review has rather depressed me. I'm not even a fan of his work but as someone who has produced an awful lot of reviews in his time, I have a degree of solidarity with people who plough what is quite a demanding row as ttrpgs are unlike any other medium and there's no John Clute, Pauline Kael or Lester Bangs to take your cues from.
I could make something of anger or disagreement but flat imcomprehension and talk about how much stuff people buy? Tough
@Taskerland what happened?

@SJohnRoss @Taskerland @Tim_Eagon A Youtube RPG reviewer. I've never liked sitting through his videos but that's a me-thing.
I did partially watch the latest on the Triangle Agency. I stopped after I felt his review did what I needed - convinced me to let go of the FOMO on this game. I might read it sometime in the future but not going to run it, I think.
I didn't see much adverse reaction in the comments. Is he getting roasted by fans of the game?

The latest Indie RPG Newsletter refer to some tension about this review on Discords that couldn’t be linked to: https://ttrpg.in/2025/09/21/triangulation/I did the same and looked and the video comments, but it was all pretty positive about the quality of the review.

@Wightbred @kevin @SJohnRoss @Taskerland I didn't watch the video, so was his review largely negative? That's actually pretty unusual nowadays.

@Tim_Eagon @kevin @SJohnRoss @Taskerland Id say it was pretty balanced review based on real play experience: creative world; evocative presentation; fun experience for players to play; but deliberately over complicated rules to fit that world make it harder to GM. I think the problem is that this is an innovate game that won a bunch of awards and that people love, so even loving criticism can look like a kick in the face. Essentially an issue with the maturity of RPG review discourse.

@Tim_Eagon @kevin @SJohnRoss @Taskerland Watching it did inspire me to immediately play a similar world, but it didn’t make me want to buy the product, and I played that world with an easier GM toolkit.

@Taskerland what happened?
@Tim_Eagon Quinns put up a review of Triangle Agency that was nuanced. This caused a real weird bout of emotional excitation in which everyone seemed to be in competition to have weird ideas about the purpose of reviews

@Wightbred the amount of pranks I want to do to @SJohnRoss in regards to cutting him away off conversations is astonishing. And I have to resist them all. CURSE YOU, MORALITY!

@vdonnut @Wightbred I think we can all watch the news and agree that morality has indeed been cursed.

@Taskerland Sounds like a lot of "you have to leave a five star review" energy.

I don't think people in gaming remember what reviews are for. They've become lost in the tar pits of parasocial logrolling

@Printdevil @Tim_Eagon It's not that they disagree, it's more that they don't seem to know what to do with the information and that's quite disheartening.

@Taskerland @Printdevil Beyond basic consumer recommendation, I don't think most people know what to do with criticism in general anymore (much less write it). It's one of the many critical thinking skills that have eroded over the past 30 years.

You can see why because streaming services have just made "stuff on tap" happen and people make judgments or just suffer stuff, but with games the prices have been creeping up and up and now jumped up, and I really would value a reasonable critical review before spending £65 on a single book.
