Seeing the words “breakthrough pop album Brat” makes me feel like I’m going crazy. Brat? The album by a person who charted number 1 in two countries on their previous album? The person who wrote a song for the Barbie movie the year before? The person who had top ten single almost a decade before Brat came out????

What exactly is being “broken through” here?

@campbell she seems to occupy a weird liminal space in the pop hierarchy.

@Tim_Eagon I agree with that and also think it is fair to say she has been extremely popular for a very long time. Brat obviously was a sort of cultural phenomenon but she was very, very well known before that

@campbell I looked up her US chart success and Brat was definitely a commercial break through compared to her other albums.

@Tim_Eagon maybe idk what a breakthrough album is supposed to mean here, but “pop star who’s already a household name has a notably successful album” doesn’t feel like the right scenario given my understanding of the term. like does that mean renaissance is a breakthrough album for beyoncé?

@campbell Prior to Brat, her highest charting album on the Billboard 200 was Crash, which reached #7 and was on the chart for 3 weeks. Brat reached #3 and was on the chart for 47 weeks.
