It collected all the creatures first presented in the #dnd adventure modules to that time. It describes over 200 monsters, each features an illustration and is indexed by habitat.

Pretty sure this book was specifically for the Basic branch (B/X, BECMI, RC). My long-lost copy had a different cover, but it was essentially the same book. A lot of the creatures were reprinted in the Mystara Monstrous Compendium Appendix for AD&D 2e.
