seeing another round of "don't favorite posts on fedi"
folks it is a kind and lovely thing to favorite someone's post and anyone who tells you not to be kind and lovely has told you something about themself
it's true that it doesn't particulary increase the distribution of your post but the idea that we're all here to get things distributed as far as possible is pretty weird
@sarae
I think I'd rather get a comment, but favorites are nice. -

@sarae It'll never stop being bizarre to me that Twitter turning faves into "retweets...but different" somehow trained people to consider that normal behaviour for that kind of button.

@sarae@ecoevo.social lmao what is wrong with people? no you favorite posts to give them a little recognition, it also effectively 'bookmarks' a post, there are other things developers could do with faves if they wanted.

@sarae ikr - there really should be a round of "how about not telling other people what to do on fedi".
-
@awawawa yeah I often use it as a way to let people know I saw their reply in a conversation
or as a "hey, right on"
-
@mycrowgirl @moss @sarae @awawawa They should henceforth be known as 'Boops'.

@sarae i like this

@runoutgroover absolutely!!!
Also nominate that the collective term for a group of boops be henceforth known as A Kindness of Boops.
@moss @sarae @awawawa -
@runoutgroover someone here could make a great electronic track called Boops and Boosts

@sarae
Anyone who tells me how to use my account gets a big ol' blockity-block-block. Life is too short to put up that type of BS. -

@sarae I've never seen that myself, who does that ?
-
@sarae this is fun to see because when I first joined fedi i saw things like "If all you do is boost things i will unfollow you"
@gloriouscow yeah I've seen that go by a couple times and I'm like, well I sure do hope you have fun somewhere else, then, neighbor

@DamonWakes I'm old enough that most of my use of Twitter was before it did that
so I find the insistence that This Is The Way pretty weird
-
@sarae I often lurk on the /explore section (or it's called "Trending" in the UI/app mostly) and I think it maybe is based on likes? Or is it only based on boosts? Also - I basically hit like on everything I read. To say "I saw that! Post more!"
@malveus I get the feeling it weights boosts most heavily but I think (and conversation elsethread seems to support) that it also considers likes when populating that feed

@sarae when I find myself doom scrolling, I go to my favorites and look at all the kitties

@sarae I fav things I find nice, but they probably don't fit thematically with other things I boost/post. For example, I usually enjoy boosting cool photography and art. If I find someone bragging about their new shoes, I will give them a like because it's cool, but people who got used to the things I usually boost will scratch their heads trying to figure out why it's on their timeline.
If someone has a problem with my like, I may as well mute them and give them nothing... π« -

Favorites are part of the conversation. They are lovely. It's like saying 'good morning' or 'thanks'. It doesn't have to be transactional. It can just be nice.

@mastodonmigration @sarae if we wanted transactional we'd be on nostr
