I would like to finally quit YouTube, which will be significant for me in that I'll be severing my last tie to corporate tech. Yay!

I have a YT channel, but that's not what keeps me on YT. It's about the awesome, bite-sized, high-quality video essays that I enjoy so much. I just can't read books ALL the time, damnit! It serves the same need for me as magazines, but...VIDEO!

I want to explore PeerTube more for sure. Anyone else have suggestions? How about Nebula?

    @alisynthesis

btw you can subscribe to a youtube channel via rss. then it will show up in your rss-reader and when you want to watch it you can watch it in a browser that is not logged into youtube and that features an add blocker.

@lislegaard that's definitely on the list of things to consider, but honestly, I'd rather leave it behind completely. Big tech is directly contributing to horrific things in my country, and I just don't want any part in it anymore. It's gone beyond mental health and privacy for me.

But RSS subscriptions are a MUCH better way to engage w/ YouTube than going to the website or app, and I would encourage anyone who isn't planning to give it up to go that way!

@AlexanderVI cool, that's great to hear! I pay for YT Premium at the moment, so I'll even end up saving money. 🙂

@alisynthesis killed my YT sub just recently, signed up for a year of Nebula (less than half the price iirc).

Nebula's good & has a lot of good stuff but it's going to be much, much more narrow than YT, & that's what's killing me... this seems obvious but after a week or two of Nebula-first viewing, i'm still kicking back to YT (now w/ ads!) regularly; for various music stuff, mostly.

          sigh.

totally! i am definitly more in the "if you gotta use it this would be a way to hack around some of the system" rather than "you should not leave", hehe!

youtube's monopoly on (mostly free) user created long form videos is INSANE!!

regarding peertube i wish sepia search was more pushed:

@tsrono oof, that's exactly what I'm afraid will happen to me!

It would probably be better for me to just watch fewer videos. But DAMN, come on!

yeah that's the thing! i just learned about it last week. which is you know, very symbolic of the whole situation.

people like you and me should OBVIOUSLY know about it, right? how do we "promote" it?

maybe we need to hire some anarchists to pirate everything they find interesting and not slop or ragebait, pirate it and put it on a peertube for us to watch.

@alisynthesis In the same position here! Everything else is relatively easy to do without (except when *bad people force my into a shared g00gled doc). No answer outside of PeerTube but I hope someone posts some good info we can all benefit from.

#peertube needs a site/app as similar to the YouTube site/app as possible. but make it FOSS and push others to make their own. but people need an example that feels like what they are used to.

but it is really really good to just at LEAST challenge the mindset that we HAVE to do everything on youtube. it reminds me of spotify for mysic in many ways.

also, i don't do any surveilance of my self hosted stuff, but i would HOPE the gender balance on my website and owncast is pretty different from my youtube...

@alisynthesis Yep. YT was one of the last things for me to sever. In the end, it wasn't as painful as I thought. Most of the stuff that's interesting to me is on archive.org anyway. And if I do need to go to YT, I just watch the vid within DuckDuckGo viewer, which strips out ads (and doesn't give the creeps any more info about me).

Attached: 3 images #Firefox allows you to add new search engine keywords by right clicking on a search field at a site and picking "add a keyword for this search" #Peertube has a search engine that searches across instances called #SepiaSearch at https://sepiaSearch.org But Firefox creates a broken search when you do this. Fix it by changing the search URL to add "search" between the / and the ? like so: https://sepiasearch.org/search?search=%s Now you can search for videos by typing in the search bar like: pt kittens

So you can type in the address bar

                                  "peertube cat videos"

                                  or set it up as

but it is really really good to just at LEAST challenge the mindset that we HAVE to do everything on youtube. it reminds me of spotify for mysic in many ways.

also, i don't do any surveilance of my self hosted stuff, but i would HOPE the gender balance on my website and owncast is pretty different from my youtube...
