Oh boy. I think I’ve been bamboozled. Various ebook stores have a new book by Neal Stephenson available. Except it reads like AI slop. Not even good AI slop.
… and it’s not mentioned on Stephenson’s website
… and I can’t find a single review of it anywhereI am ashamed to admit I read three pages before I realised I’d been scammed.

My executive dysfunction finally let me get around to preordering the next @cstross novel at 1am, so I guess it’s my own fault for falling for this scam in my sleep deprived state:
Wrong publisher, a blurb that doesn’t mention past works or reviews, and a weird looking cover. But it shows up in searches for Neal Stephenson’s work, so fuck me I guess?

@Fruan Is there a way to report this for impersonation/trade dress?

@cstross I’m not sure - it seems to be available on every ebook vendor I’ve checked so far as part of my spiral of disbelief.

@Fruan That could simply mean it's being pumped out through one of the self-pub market aggregators. His current publisher is HarperCollins (for "Bomb Light") so I imagine their piracy department would be interested in hearing about whoever's behind this: if they're impersonating one author using AI, chances are > 99.99% that they're impersonating a raft of others.

@kimlockhartga @Fruan The web disintermediates supply chains. Well no, it just replaced them with Amazon … and allowed grifters to plug themselves into the upstream end, and now LLMs have reduced the cost of generating garbage ersatz books to nothing.
