I would sometimes shake things up and go mostly staff with a sling. The sling is hilariously entertaining on many fronts. It’s not really a big damage weapon, but with called shots life gets fun. Headshots? Yup. Knocking out guards? Indeed. Breaking that vial of potion to release the spell/fog/acid? Bingo.

Sneaking a ranged weapon into town? Have fun with that heavy crossbow, I’m just wrapping the sling around as a belt. Ammo? Sling stones are fabricated, but any old rock can improvise.

While the longbow / longsword ranger is just classicly awesome, a sling / (something) is worth giving a try.

    Next up: atlatl barbarian!

Kender Rangers. They take the whole ‘professional traveling nuisance’ shtick to a whole new level of commitment.

Would they be worth making a favored enemy if they were inferior? Obviously not! It’s a compliment, really.

In a mud, I played a fisher cat person, whose only weapon skill was a sling. And boy howdy if you were accurate animals just fucking dropped. I’d usually hunt rabbits with it and they could be one shot kills. The deer like creatures would usually take a few hits but I once got a headshot and it was just gone. No slowly walking towards it while slinging, it was just down.

Either it’s actual wolverines or I need to read more comics.

I think op is just assuming rangers are the only ones who can track people, which Logan is skilled at.

I agree, play the class how you want, it’s one of the major appeals of the game

I remember the first time I encountered systems that aren’t strict class + level, and realizing I had so much more freedom to make the ideas I had. D&D (and close relatives) are surprisingly anti-creative.

My partner is playing their first real D&D campaign after years of doing one-offs here and there, and the closed nature of classes and leveling is really tripping them up.

Narratively, it makes sense that their barbarian would want to take some druid levels. But mechanically, they’re making the game a lot harder than it needs to be.

                  Bardin’s job was literally ranger.

An occupation and a class are not the same.

Right? It’s so coarse. You can’t take wild shape without also getting full spell casting. The game is full of stuff like that. No fine control. Also huge opportunity costs. Dip into another class? Enjoy not getting your second attack for weeks of real life time.

The coarse bundling probably good for some kinds of beginner players, but it’s really restrictive.

That’s elves, and dwarves, and humans, and orcs, and goblins.

Halflings and gnomes are above such things.

Just ask a gnome what they think about kobolds, see how that goes
