The only other newspaper running this story is the Toronto Star… also US owned by the same company.

Most recent ownership info I can find is that the Star is owned by Torstar Corporation, which is owned by NordStar Capital.

Canadian company, and not Postmedia. Is this not still true?

I was pretty sure it was the Toronto Star that was Postmedia… I may be remembering incorrectly. I’m gonna delete my comment until I can verify.

Postmedia has a bunch of “* Star” papers and the Toronto Sun but notably not the Toronto Star.

The star went private a few years ago, the new owners broke up and then the sole owner fired the head editor.

            I think it’s still Canadian.

The headline is misleading because the Ottawa Citizen is owned by conservative fanboys, PostMedia. Carney promised a balanced budget but his budget guy said that’s not going to happen since making good on his campaign promises is more costly than initially expected and balancing would require a budget cut. They’re not doing that. That’s just taken out of context for the headline.

But in an interview, Giroux said that the promise of a cap on the public service will not be enough to mitigate Carney’s additional spending. He said he expects higher deficits, and as a result, higher debt servicing charges over the next few years.

              Emphasis mine.

“To balance or to pay for these types of additional spending there would need to be severe cuts to the public service, significant cuts,” Giroux said.

There would need to be cuts to balance the budget. That’s why they’re not going to balance the budget.

              This is a lie.

It’s worse than a lie really. Behind this claim are two decisions that the Liberals have made in advance so that they can present this with the frame that cuts are “necessary”:

              1. The spending is required, despite not having it in the budget.
              2. The budget may not be increased through taxing the rich.

In other words, Carney wants a pony and rather than make his rich friends pay for it, he’s going to screw everyone else.

              So yeah, conservatives.

This is a bad news source.

I’m not saying the article is inaccurate but Postmedia isn’t even worth fact checking. Therefore not worth reading.

Doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a right wing bias and agenda, though. I haven’t read thd Star in decades, so I don’t know. Just pointing out the (probably) painfully obvious (because I have a tendency to do that).

From what I remember they were losing a lot of money, so they’ve mostly switched to opinion pieces that are more likely to go viral and drive subscriptions

No idea of that changed the bias

They’re going to avoid public service cuts by taxing the very rich, right?

The party has clearly shifted right under Carney, but conflating them with the Conservatives isn’t just inaccurate, it’s dangerous. Yes, there’s overlap on some issues, but the Conservatives are far more extreme. We’ve seen what happens when we treat two parties as the same despite glaring differences: it only helps the worst actors.

What we need now is relentless pressure for left-wing policies and holding our politicians accountable.

The Ottawa Citizen is American owned media pretending to be Canadian, infiltrating Canadian culture and politics.
