Another one of those cases where the “within field of vision” part of mage hand isn’t really adhered to.

A spectral, floating hand appears at a point you choose within range.

    Where would that part be?

I always enjoyed this aspect of D&D games: the creative, interesting enemies, places, and artifacts that you could find in some of the books/tomes.

In fact, i was able to find the exact book i was thinking of at archive.org! The AD&D 2nd edition Book of Artifacts: https://archive.org/details/tsr02138add2ebookofartifacts/mode/1up

Here’s one of my favorites from the book, though it’s been so long i really could do to give in another gander:

I saw that too!! I was googling about it for a while this morning, fascinating stuff! I enjoy the ways that they recommend introducing the character and house into a campaign etc in the Book of Artifacts, too. I think it’s cool they use real folklore to give the game flavor and interest.

Yeah. And even when someone challenges you to play another noble paladin, they never get less weird.

It directly says so in the text of the book.
