Periodic reminder: I've already said many times that I think Fediverse (or at least a future flavor of it) wins in the end. It's too asymmetrically powerful in its ability to resist centralized pressure from very rich fashy tech bros. The inter-instance infighting and Fediverse drama of the month that we lament, is actually its strength.
This has very little to do with *technical* decentralization. It is about *social* decentralization. Mastodon mega instances are not socially decentralized. But the human building blocks for evolving to many smaller instances, are there.
And every time another social media platform messes up, there is a net flow of users towards alternatives, usually Fediverse, but often other platforms too. So if BlueSky does one day flip and turn just like Twitter, there will be a flow from there to here too.
So yay, Fediverse wins in the end. But we're not at the end. We're not even in the middle. Fediverse is still not ready to be the place.
There are things to learn from BlueSky. I'm not interested in having a debate on this with anyone. If you don't think that there is anything to learn, then fine. I respect your opinion. But please keep that opinion out of my mentions.
If you're selfish enough to think "Fediverse works for me, and don't really care if millions of Black people aren't welcome here, and therefore have to use other platforms that also mistreat them," also fine. But again, please keep that opinion out of my mentions. I'm not Charlie Kirk and I'm not Steven Crowder. I don't want to debate you. I don't want to try to change your mind. And you won't change mine.
Because nothing you say will get me to stop supporting Fediverse and ATProto safety projects.
I'm stubborn like that.

@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io do you think projects like Bonfire are a step in the right direction?

@mekkaokereke 100% agree! There's always something to learn and room for improvement.

@mekkaokereke also, was going to ask in my last toot but i ran out of chars: as some1 who doesn't know literally anything abt bluesky, r u happy to share some of the things youve learned from the platform?
Here are two good things that have been learned /borrowed from. No, they didn't originate any of these ideas.
1. Composable Moderation is good:
mekka okereke :verified: (@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io)
@dsmdexter@mastodon.social Example 1. Admin: Supposed I'm a white dude new Mastodon instance admin. I start a small instance, "AussieFrisbeePups of Bay Area." It's an instance of around 100 Australian Shepherd Frisbee enthusiasts in the Bay Area.🐶🥏 I have no experience with moderating content from the darkest corners of the web, and don't want to learn it. I just like dogs and frisbees! But some of my users are Black women, and I want them to have a good time on my instance too. But I'm not sure I have the cultural education to moderate posts effectively. What to do? One of my white users posts that their dog has "nappy hair." Is that racist? Should I... do something? Am I overthinking this? No report has been filed? Is it racist to ask a Black user what they think I should do? Is it racist not to? This is getting complicated... Now imagine if as part of Mastodon instance setup, the configuration software asks me about labeling services that I can subscribe to. One is called BlackSky. BlackSky will label all posts with tags that I can act on. See the labels that can be applied here: https://bsky.app/profile/blacksky.app In addition to block lists that I can subscribe to, I can also subscribe to labeling services. Example 2. User: Now imagine that as a user on AussieFrisbeePups, I have a particular vulnerability to eating disorder triggering content. People posting either their weight loss diets or baking pastry creations is not bad, it's just bad *for me*. I'm told that I shouldn't ask people, especially Black people, to CW label stuff all the time? But it hurts me to see it. I wish someone would label food content for me! Now imagine if I as a user can subscribe to a labeling service that warns me about eating disorder triggering posts. Example 3. User: Now imagine I am a dog breeder in Australia. I have no problem at all with US people talking about their messed up politics all the time, but it's just not something I want taking up so much of my feed. But I get yelled at when I tell Americans to put a "uspol" label on things, especially Black people. Am I racist when I say, "please use uspol?" I wish someone would label US politics posts for me, so that I can see the AussieFrisbeePups content but not hear about fashy stuff all the time.
Hachyderm.io (hachyderm.io)
2. Giving people the ability to detach their post from Quote Posts, is good. If you Quote Post me to add context, I can keep it! If you Quote Post me to drag me, and I kinda deserve it, I can also keep it! But if you Quote Post me and I'm not enjoying the experience, I can detach your Quote Post from my post, and live in peace.

@mekkaokereke I absolutely feel you in what you're saying. And I believe in learning from anything I can.
I will also say that my instance has 10 users, of which like 3 are regularly active. I never know what the Fediverse drama of the month is because it goes sailing past my tiny instance. I see my friends and follows and they see me. That's enough.

@mekkaokereke I still feel the core bit — incentive to decentralize — is fragile. You really have to understand the dangers of sticking to the most convenient instance. I may not post on x, bluesky, but picking an instance that might not be here next year is a hard sell (even if moving around was architecturally thought of). Yet another thing to feel bad about (for being more lazy than principled).
