@randahl @_elena tldr politicians gives a flying fuck whether they are on fascist social network as long as they get something out of it. Also that are totally technical illiterate. Mostly.

@randahl @_elena even more ironic are non right wing parties which are really totally against fascism. Which they communicate on fascist networks...

@randahl I don't want to defend ppl on X. I love the Fediverse and deleted two very nice accounts when Musk bought Twitter. But recently I am having second thoughts and I am wondering if some of this is behind decent people staying there: here at M. I preach to the choir, so to say. I can post, boost and comment as I want, but the people who should hear/read it are not here. All the news and pictures of Gaza - actually my main concern, bc family - should be there to be seen, not just here.

@GRA3432 @randahl Those people have the misplaced expectation that people on X will see that news and those pictures. They won’t, because X’s algorithms will limit their reach — both because individual people’s interest does not lie there and because X actively supresses Gaza news. Those well-meaning people are throwing bread into the sewer that is X, thinking that they are feeding ducks.

If I worked for Mastodon, I would create a turn key solution for parties that want to set up a Mastodon server for all their party candidates.

Ilhan Omar is still on X.
Bernie Sanders is still on X.
        AOC is still on X.

Make it easy for them to switch. Then make sure they are aware of this option.

@randahl yesterday at FOSDEM there was a member of the European Parliament who was asked why so many politicians are still on X and her answer made total sense (sadly):

Politicians stay on X because journalists are still there, so they feel that if they leave they will become irrelevant / not be written about.

And journalists stay on X because politicians are there.

          It’s a vicious cycle

@_elena @randahl ironically someone like Trump is not on X anymore but on his own platform. VIP politicians could host their own mastodon server, maybe that's a better approach?

Indeed a vicious circle. Maybe they could break it by putting their primary posts and scoops on Mastodon first, and only a day later on X.

@randahl I can't see anything difficult. They can easily go to mastodon.social and create an account.

Who wants something will find a way. Who doesn't will find an excuse.

But, Randahl, perhaps they are attempting to attract new voters who are fed up with their opposition aka trump's crowd of idiots. I am backing James Talarico here in TX for US Senator; he has been on FOX news several times; and only with Joe Rogan, who liked what he had to say. His opponent in the Dem primary is Jasmine Crockett who is a firebrand in the House, and though I like her, she doesn't like James being on right wing shows; to me she is limiting herself by NOT being on those shows. I just think James who has a very calm delivery will attract more middle of the road & dissatisfied Republican voters than she ever will. Peace, my brother.

@_elena @randahl and if just some politicians started to _interact_ with people on the fediverse instead of just having their PR posted, there would be stories to tell and journalists would come.

@randahl Dear God, do not encourage politicians who have high risk factors of being targeted by bad actors to create their own Mastodon servers.

Mastodon does NOT in ANY WAY have appropriate system safeguards against motivated bad-faith actors.

                              This is *one* example: https://bsky.app/profile/thisismissem.social/post/3m2nigx3tnc2h

@_elena @randahl I think there is a rise of fascism in many countries (which does not mean people became fascist). Fascist politicians will not move from fascist platforms. Worst, the non-fascist politicians are mimicking the fascist ones to obtain votes. For instance, in the Chilean presidential election, most of the candidates focused on migration because that was the main topic of the fascist candidate. Then, non-fascists will be where fascists are.

@_elena @randahl I think public universities could contribute to moving from fascist platforms, but few of them have taken this seriously. I know only two universities that are doing this by creating Mastodon instances for academics and students.

Attached: 1 image According to this #Wikidata query (https://w.wiki/HgMK), there are currently two public universities in the world with #Mastodon instances, managed by @KIT_Karlsruhe@social.kit.edu and @uniinnsbruck@social.uibk.ac.at, from Germany and Austria. Are there more?
