@benroyce So smart people of the fediverse -- What's the solution to letting real people be anonymous when they need to be, whilst getting rid of the anonymous bot farms and trolls?

@benroyce Merz is white as American toast, old as fuck, privileged like few others. For his facilities to empathy, look no further than his CV, which mainly consists of eating snacks in BlackRot meetings while passing around his political address book (while demanding that employees in Germany ought to work more to push the GNP).
No, all these (very valid!) reasons you list simply don't exist in the world of a Friedrich Merz.
(also of note: The anglosaxon world is rather relaxed about name changes, to the point that some Australian state had to add some "not more than once per year and not more than 3 in a life time, if you can help it" restriction. Names are regulated _a lot_ in Germany, from what the parents can choose to what naming combinations can result from marriage to "you better have a _really_ good reason for asking for any non-marriage related name change, and we will fight you every step of the journey".)
they don't even have last names in indonesia
i like that
it's as if everyone went around as "Prince" or "Beyonce"

My real name is Ben Royce. I frequently shoot my mouth off on Mastodon. I don't fucking care
That's a luxury many people don't have
Some are trans and live in the USA
Some are in sensitive domestic or work situations
Some are exploring themselves and don't want humiliation or regret following them if they fuck up
Lots of valid reasons for #anonymity
So no Mr. #Merz, that's a stupid idea, fuck off

Germany's Merz calls for real names on the internet
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for an end to widespread anonymity on the internet, saying users should post under their real names. "I want to see real names on the internet.

@benroyce I remember this conversation in early days of Google +. Requiring names really is an entitled man’s POV. There are women who are being stalked, in unsafe relationships, all those other people you mentioned. We know that real names do not ensure civilized, respectful, behaviour, just look at the entire US gov who is online. Too many billionaires. The Tates of the world. This doesn’t end well.
This reminds me of the badly-named US SAVE act. It will limit things to a few privileged.

More like Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse.
America had Walt Disney, we had Marten Toonder. His main characters were Tom Poes and Olivier B. Bommel but my personal favorite has always been Plukkie Panda.
the resemblance is perfect

That is still very very friendly. In Hitchcocks "North by Northwest" Cary Grants mother says about her son: "Well, he's a genuine idiot".
The german say: "Not all men are idiots. Some are full idiots" - Nicht alle Männer sind Idioten. Manche sind Vollidioten.

#Merz is not as venal as Trump (but then, few are), and not as committed to fascism. But he has a vicious temper, and doesn't really seem to see people who are not rich as "people" he ought to care about - they are there to be admonished that they are not contributing enough to Germany's GDP, and thus should work harder.
I always compare him to Diederich Hessling, the villain protagonist of "Der Untertan", a vicious satire of German society of the later years of the Second German Empire. Hessling always licked the boots of those "above him" in order to climb the social ladder, and kicked those "below him", and the same seems to be true of Merz.
Merz seems follow the “Kiss up, kick down” strategy.

@juergen_hubert @benroyce “not as committed to fascism”. I’m not sure that those who have protested Germany’s support of the Gaza genocide would agree with that. Hasn’t there also been a move to ban the teaching of Marxism, with echoes from the past…?

Merz is a horrible person, no doubt.
But there is still a difference between "selling the country out to the highest bidder" and "openly striving to become the next Führer, complete with all aesthetics and unifying all power in his hands".
