    A random curiosity poll, about emigration! 🏡

    If you could, right at this very second, without any kind of legal difficulty, myriad hoops to jump through, quarantine of pets or paying for the move and travel, or worrying about a job… Move to a remarkably sleepy little Finnish town with mostly grandmothers, old aunties and uncles, broke students and old disused farms? The rent is very little and you could buy an entire house or apartment for as little as 25k euros. There’s not much to do, but the forests, lakes and rivers are everywhere, and the internet is good.

        @adriano Cool gigs, clubs, events or shows to go to? No

        As much nature as your heart can take while having access to fast 5G, cable or fibre almost anywhere you are? Yes

          @sinituulia You know those guys who claim to like long treks in the mountains on their Tinder profiles?

          Well, no because you're not into that, and also because I don't do Tinder. But I do like mountain trekking.

            @adriano Sadly no mountains in Finland. Or rather the ancient mountains that existed got shaved the heck down like a nub of hard cheese by the Ice Ages and the passage of time, so now there's only fells and large hills! Still beautiful, but not very high

              @sinituulia

              I would need to get a #ttrpg group going, which would be difficult without knowing #Finnish , and living in a small town would make it even harder.

              Plus, I want to visit my father and the rest of my family in Bavaria on a regular basis. Right now, I can do that with long-ish train trips, but that would not be feasible in Finland.

                And that's another thing. I grew up in hill country, and now I live in the northwestern German flatlands. Sure, Finland has more lakes and forests, but I do miss the hillscapes on the horizon!

                  @juergen_hubert I think Finland hits above its population weight (vis-a-vis other European countries) re: TTRPG players, and I would argue that most young people handle English really well (I would say there are far more able English speakers than in Germany, France, Italy or Spain per capita). It's the family and friends thing that's hard to manage, otherwise I would be in that ship already. @sinituulia

                    Yeah, but how many of them would be willing to play in English for the same of a single foreigner?

                      @juergen_hubert @Illuminatus A lot of them, probably. 😄 It's already utterly normal to play online in English because it's much easier to find gaming company across countries and/or continents. There are some people who are not good at English, but there's also a huge international students culture. In my youth I'd walk into a party and there would be 20 people talking in eight different languages, and everyone switching to English or Finnish when changing conversation partners!

                        @sinituulia @juergen_hubert @Illuminatus Also don’t forget that the rest of us will all be there with you in the tiny village.

                        It’ll be the biggest, most international tiny village ever, and it’ll be full of nerds.

                          @slothrop @sinituulia @Illuminatus

                          Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

                          Because I will assume that there will be a limited pool of local women interested in dating nerdy foreigners...
