Stupid question: Do you have access to your Nginx logs to see which specific IP addresses or endpoints are causing the most load? so you can rate limit? like this radio station in Eureka just did to me not two minutes ago?

Curious if you’re using nginx’s proxy_cache so that cached requests are taken care of by nginx instead of Mastodon?

@Viss That's what I did in my .htaccess file. I redirected user agents with Mastodon in the user agent string to a static page that had enough information for instances to generate a preview

@stux If there's a specific User-agent that might be a start but I have a horrible feeling you're going to need a very large map of servers as a Referer list.
