My son has the best History/Social Studies teacher. The man LOVES history and he also loves getting the kids to do something hands-on for each segment they learn. For example, they had to mummify chicken breasts. I mean, I'm sure it bore no real resemblance to mummification, but there were spices and wrapping and then checking to see how well-preserved their piece of chicken was later. It's the kind of thing that will stick with you, is what I'm saying.

The last thing they are doing this year is a water balloon fight, but they all have to make a cardboard shield with their family crest. They have to look up a crest for their family name (if they don't actually know what their crest looks like), and then they have to draw that on their shield.

I'm really trying hard not to do this project for him. I would LOVE to make a shield! I would put Trogdor on mine, family crest be danged.

And there would be consummate Vs.

Anyway, my contributions are "Yes, we have markers, here they are" and "Would you like a piece of white cardboard to put in front of your brown cardboard, and draw your crest on that so that it's more visible?"

I also got some clear Contact Paper, because having a barrier between the water balloons and the paper shield seems wise.

My last suggestion was to use metal brads to attach the straps - I think that will hold better than tape or glue. And I think I can dig out some old wide-band elastic for the straps, so that it will hold the shield on his arm more reliably than cardboard strips.

I am half thinking I should send The Husband to drive by the school that day (he'll be off work anyway) and see if he can get some pictures or video of this epic battle.
