    Source (Bluesky)

Context: There was a typo on Archives of Nethys where the Bristle Boar was marked as level 83, and if you know anything about Pathfinderโ€™s scaling you know exactly why that is hilarious.

What makes it even better is that it was Paizoโ€™s offical account that posted it:

To be clear, a level 80 creature would be over one trillion times stronger than a level 20 character

I know just enough about Pathfinder to think โ€œyeah, that sounds like the kind of beautiful nonsense I should expect for Pathfinderโ€

The boar being level 83 is a typo in an old manual, but people have leaned into it for fun.

The boar is actually level 3.

It wouldnโ€™t even roll dice. With a weighted die to roll all natural 1โ€™s, all results would still be decided by modifiers alone, and the results would be death.

The best case scenario is that the creature acts as the immortal snail, and your character spends the rest of their life on the run.

A natural 1 on an attack roll is an automatic miss in Pathfinder, isnโ€™t it? Your modifiers donโ€™t matter if you keep rolling automatic misses.

              Not in Pathfinder 2E!

There are four possible results to a roll:

              • Critical failure
              • failure
              • success
              • critical success

Natural 1โ€™s and 20โ€™s are not automatic misses or hits, they only move you down or up a step in the result.

if your modifier for a statistic is so high that adding it to a 1 from your d20 roll exceeds the DC by 10 or more, you can succeed even if you roll a natural 1!

Natural 1 and Natural 20 - Rules - Archives of Nethys: Pathfinder 2nd Edition Database

If you rolled a 20 on the die (a โ€œnatural 20โ€), your result is one degree of success better than it would be by numbers alone. If you roll a 1 on the d20 (a โ€œnatural 1โ€), your result is one degree worse. This means that a natural 20 usually results in a critical success and natural 1 usually results in a critical failure. However, if you were going up against a very high DC, you might get only a success with a natural 20, or even a failure if 20 plus your total modifier is 10 or more below the DC. Likewise, if your modifier for a statistic is so high that adding it to a 1 from your d20 roll exceeds the DC by 10 or more, you can succeed even if you roll a natural 1!

Certain abilities can change the degree of success on a roll. When resolving such an ability, apply the adjustment from a natural 20 or natural 1 before anything else.

Just downgrades the results a step, so itโ€™s Oops, All Hits rather than Oops, All Crits.

I roll one with the die. The die is with me.
