"There were a number of major challenges, but all of them stemmed from the fact that the master data and source code from the original game no longer existed."
Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles does not include The War of the Lions content | RPG Site
Square Enix also confirms that it lost the original source code in a new interview with Director Kazutoyo Maehiro.

Jesus. Makes me wonder how many other games of that age are just totally lost now. #Gaming #FinalFantasy

"We analyzed a number of existing versions of the game and reconstructed the programming of the original, but there were also times where we played the original game and worked it out by feel alone..."

@CactuarJoe Too many sadly and not just games. Same thing with music masters. From what I've read in several interviews, hard drive storage was super expensive, so game devs would just overwrite and re-use the hard drives after a game was finished. Or in case of FFT they overwrote the main Japanese version with additional languages. Games were made for cartridges, pre-internet era, there was no way to change anything after release. Back then it never occurred to them that there could be a demand for remasters or ports to modern consoles 30 years later

@chris Woof, man, the idea of overwriting the source code for localization makes me *itch*, that sounds like an accident waiting to happen
