I think the fediverse is only good if your social media usage isn't one that's based in racially marginalized communities, especially if you use social media to connect with racially marginalized communities offline.

There's a reason basically no anti-ICE organization is happening on this network. Say what you will about centralized services, but they're better at connecting oppressed people.
@so_treu As much as I value the fedi as a social experiment, this is its greatest failure.

@forse I think it was a decent experiment that has run its course, and there's still useful things about it that can be engaged with but overall yeah

@so_treu it’s too easy to create your own little silo of like-minded people here, and completely cut off any intrusion of differing ideas. While it’s good, and sometimes necessary, to not be constantly bombarded by aggressive nonsense, I worry that people are retreating into cocoons of only the ideas and facts that they find comfortable. It’s hard change society for the better, if you don’t allow yourself to see the problems.
In a way, it’s like the Fediverse is a privilege-enhancer. If you have the privilege to not be personally affected by a problem, it lets you be peacefully oblivious that it even exists.

@so_treu folk here seem to be in their own little realms. The more time spent here the more it becomes apparent the fedi never was built with us in mind. Just techy white folk declaring Independence from their big bad techy cousins...
@imp3tuz it must be soooo nice to have your biggest digital concern be decentralization and "omg big tech are taking ur data oh noesssss"

@so_treu It *seems* to work very well for trans women, definately an oppressed group, but then I notice that almost all of us that it's working out for are white, and thus I must conclude it's really not working well at all.

@so_treu true, and also, given how public it is and how easy it is for people to fuck up self-hosting, I'm not sure people should use it too much for organizing anyway. See: that time kolektiva's database got taken by the feds because an admin had downloaded a copy for some reason.
if there's anything we should learn from the centralization of social media it's probably that no one should rely on one site for anything

@so_treu really wish i could have that as my biggest concern lmaooooo

@nev NO ONE SHOULD RELY ON ONE SITE FOR EVERYTHING thank you!!!!!!!! I don't know why people are so opposed to people having multiple accounts/spaces on multiple platforms, cause that's just how it works for most people!!!

@nev I also feel like everyone moved on too fast from the kolektiva thing cause what the fuck
But then again I guess it's inconvenient for the fedi evangelists, so

@so_treu I'm mostly appalled by how most kolektiva users were okay with it. Like, okay then *writes every single user off*

@nev YEAH!?!?!??! like but I thought y'all were...............oh okay nevermind then I guess?????

@so_treu unfortunately, "before using an app/signing up for a site you should ask who runs it, what their qualifications and principles are, and how it's funded" is not compatible with "apps should be easy to use, frictionless, and $0"
and it's very hard to convince people that apps should be harder, less convenient, and less fun to use
(I wrote out some more about this, then cut it and saved it in a file called social-media-pessimism.txt and am probably going to stay offline for much of the day lol)
