      as a teenager my brother used to troll both me and his mates simultaneously by getting them to knock on my bedroom door and ask me why the Eagles couldn’t just fly the Ring to Mordor.

        @astronomerritt Weren't they already deus ex machina enough?

        Also, besides which, and have we mentioned, then there wouldn't have been all that lovely story!

          @emery There are several solid lore reasons why the Eagles couldn’t take the Ring, but honestly, “there wouldn’t have been all that lovely story” is the best reason there is!

            @astronomerritt

            I was flabbergasted, several years ago, to realize that, if the Orcs were made by Melkor by misbreeding and distorting captured Elves, then they never received the Gift of Men, which I would think would make for some extremely awkward reunions in the Halls of Mandos.

              @astronomerritt Back when the movies came out an online buddy and I delighted in commenting on Slashdot and including the phrase "Boromir son of Faramir"

                    @davidr That’s wrong in the most hilarious way and I respect it, honestly.

                      @stevegis_ssg There are many reasons why Tolkien might have moved away from the “corrupted elves” origin of orcs, but this is definitely one of the funniest.
