as a teenager my brother used to troll both me and his mates simultaneously by getting them to knock on my bedroom door and ask me why the Eagles couldn’t just fly the Ring to Mordor.

@emery There are several solid lore reasons why the Eagles couldn’t take the Ring, but honestly, “there wouldn’t have been all that lovely story” is the best reason there is!

I was flabbergasted, several years ago, to realize that, if the Orcs were made by Melkor by misbreeding and distorting captured Elves, then they never received the Gift of Men, which I would think would make for some extremely awkward reunions in the Halls of Mandos.

@stevegis_ssg There are many reasons why Tolkien might have moved away from the “corrupted elves” origin of orcs, but this is definitely one of the funniest.
