I like Jimmy Kimmel.

I like Jimmy Kimmel. I really do. I have no issues with him.
I'm talking about something very different.
Kimmel was only suspended. But he's back now. Karen Attiah and all the other Black journalists are still fired.
Y'all do know how to fight, when you want to.
But you don't really want to.
️
Y'all fight for comedians. Which is why you don't have Black journalists to oppose Trump, but you do have famed resistance leaders *check notes* Matt Parker and Trey Stone.
️
Kimmel is interviewing Gavin Newsom in his return. His podcast guests were the dudes that got the Black journalists fired.
You want to live in a world where Bill Maher and Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert and Matt Parker and Trey Stone are inside the line that must be protected at all costs...
but Black journalists and academics and professionals are outside of the castle walls, and are acceptable losses in a siege.
I'm telling you that that world doesn't exist.
Either we're all safe, or none of us are safe.
Kimmel and Colbert and jokes cannot save you from what's coming.
You need the people that you won't fight for, to fight for you.
But one-way solidarity ain't it.

@mekkaokereke Comedians didn't end the Vietnam War, even though they opposed it.
The brave journalists, black and white, that reported what was really going on were the ones that turned the tide and energized the public against that war.
I don't see sustained outrage against ANY serious journalist, editorialist, or cartoonist being fired - and that is disturbing in and of itself. We don't really care, maybe because they don't make us laugh or because they are writing about "hard things", or their drawings hold up a mirror to ourselves.
Letting the last black journalist on that "newspaper" go, and with such a lame justification, is terrible.
And we will mostly sweep it under the rug and forget about it, and that is tragic because it says something about how seriously we really are taking this situation.
We are sliding into fascism, just slowly enough that when we get there it will be too late, and future generations will ask, how did they not know?

Posting direct quotes from someone who died is quintessential journalism. It's wild to start firing people simply for pointing out that the person for whom we're all being demanded to mourn literally said that several of the smartest and most powerful Black Women in the country “do not have brain processing power to be taken really seriously" and had to "steal a white person’s slot.”
We are judging him by the quality of his character, how his own words directly affected us, and his use of the power he had led some crazy cishet white kid to see him as a legitimate target for his grievances. Nothing more, nothing less.
