We played our Pathfinder 2 game yesterday and it was great. One of our group was having a birthday, so we brought a charcuterie tray and a fruit tray. So good. We didn't bring cake or muffins because he's diabetic.
Our "new" party member was a great fit even if the meet-cute with the new character was the expected mix of awkward and hilarious. I mean, we all know they are joining the party, but dude. You just showed up while we were recovering from an intense fight where one of our group members was killed. We're not feeling particularly open and welcoming right now. You can't just peek into the yurt like we're not on the edge of attacking anything that breathes (or doesn't breathe, for that matter).
Anyway, we now have a human fighter and my character finally decided she was okay after we had a fight and the new person held her own.
After resting in our yurt, we went back to the desecrated altar and temple (the site of our last big fight). We went into the building where those danged pitcher plants had been and we found a buried chest with some really useful stuff.
We wanted to undo the desecration of the altar even though none of us follow that deity. But none of us had a strong enough spell prepared, and we didn't feel like it would be right to spend 3 days on a ritual when the clock is ticking.
The chest had two scrolls of Dispel and we were able to dispel the desecration successfully which was awesome.
Then we went into the temple itself and found some fungal puffball things on the walls. There were 3 of them and one of them was glowing. Upon examination, we determined that the two that were dimmed had been connected to enemies we had already defeated. That meant the brightly glowing one represented another enemy that was still unknown.
But not for long! When we went further in and found kind of a nasty pulsing fungal mass, we were greeted by a harpy who at first seemed menacing but reasonable. They suggested that rather than us wrecking their home, they would produce the person we had been searching for. Awesome! Love it when we can overcome an encounter through diplomacy rather than combat!
Except that's not what this was. Oh, the harpy was able to present the missing investigator, but he wasn't really "himself" any longer. He was a zombie who was infected with fungus. Dang it.
And then a few more "used to be elves or maybe half-elves but are now thralls" came in, and the fight was on.
I managed to get a Heightened Divine Immolation cast while they were grouped up (and before anyone from my group got in there). It hit them all. They all failed the save, so they took persistent fire damage (and some of them never managed to shake it, which was great).
The new Fighter went right in and kind of accidentally killed the guy we were there to retrieve (who was now a zombie). It was a little like Fezzik saying "I didn't mean to jog him so hard...."
Oh well, I don't think that McGuffin guy was going to make a comeback.
We figured out when we defeated the thralls, they would explode spores on us, but apparently we have fought enough of this sort of thing that we all made our saves. We had also all put some Greater Antifungal Salve before going in, which had been a great suggestion from the wizard. That helped with saves.
The Wizard made the new fighter larger, so she was able to reach the harpy when they decided to fly. The Champion and my character kept after the Thralls.
It was a tough fight because the Harpy was reasonably successful in casting against us. But we eventually prevailed - the fighter got some nice attacks of opportunity which helped out a bunch (I don't think that's what they are called in Pathfinder, but if you play ttrpgs you know what I mean).
Once all the foes were vanquished, we healed up (again) and started hunting around - the guy we were supposed to find should have had a book that would help us out.
Before we could find it, we realized something was happening with the big mass of pulsing fungus. We ran over to check it out and thanks to a really high knowledge check, we figured out that it was going to generate a demon.
By the time we figured that out, it was too late. It had started hatching and we watched in horror as a gargantuan demon slowly emerged. It kind of looked like a spider/mantis/wolf? I can't really describe it. But it was big and scary looking.
DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN!
And that's where we ended!!! So that fight has to wait until next week. We're supposed to prepare the next level for our characters, so probably we'll have the fight, then officially level up, and we'll move into the next part of the story.
I'm enjoying Pathbuilder a lot more since I sprang for the paid version. I still mainly work from my printed character sheet during the game, but Pathbuilder is so handy for keeping track of spells. If you like Pathfinder 2 and you haven't tried Pathbuilder, go check it out.
