@jonobie @mekkaokereke The bearing witness is the documenting, recording, so accountability can come. There will be a day of reckoning and the videos and eye-witness reports will be very useful.
@CStamp Agreed — that’s definitely how it should be used. It seems like it’s drifted over time to mean “I am watching those artifacts so I don’t become complacent.” (Or at least, that’s how I sometimes hear it in my communities.) That’s a worthy sentiment but not great for mental health.

@jonobie Yeah. I think being aware and “woke” are what’s important. That 17-yr-old girl who had the presence of mind to video a murder taking place before her eyes, with nothing else she could do, should be the inspiration. The video proved the cops lied, committed murder, got some justice for Floyd, even if it couldn’t bring him back to life. @mekkaokereke

"You don't have to watch the video."
Seriously. You don't.
Your life won't be improved by seeing it. Especially if you already oppose ICE.
@mekkaokereke That is valid advice, but I'm glad I saw the longer video of the man assaulted in the street who refused to be dragged away. It was a gut punch.

@mekkaokereke Amen. I just want to add: there are photos that are historically important as well as deeply traumatic to see. Kent State, Napalm Girl, Emmett Till's body, etc. But the difference is whether one needs to see them to understand a reality being denied. A deeply shocking photo can shed light, change minds, and shift political agendas. So there are people who DO need to see this video. It's unnecessary for those who know all too well that ICE is a rogue paramilitary force that gleefully terrorizes, kidnaps, and murders civilians of all ages/races/statuses--without consequence. Those won't learn anything new from it. Arguably, ICE even wants its opposition to take in many videos like this, to heighten fear and acquiescence.
Stay angry, stay mobilized, but _do_ share the video to individuals who still are deluding themselves about what ICE is. Because that's who needs a searing traumatic image that they can't get out of their heads. They need to confront the disconnects that they are clinging to.

@mekkaokereke I agree that no one should feel guilty for not watching a snuff video. Anyone posting those videos should use the appropriate hashtags and content warnings.
On the other hand, snuff videos are the only thing that springs liberals into action.
We had an ICE murder just two days ago, and it was largely missed.
I've never had anything more than a wishy-washy opinion on this. Idk.

@dnkboston
That's one I would want to see.
More of that please.
But, most of all, the videos of huge masses of people have been giving me strength to hope. -

@mekkaokereke +1.
The videos are important, in that they will serve as evidence in the presumed scenario that we will overcome and take all these fuckers to justice where they belong.
But if you already know what’s happening, then I don’t see the point in torturing oneself.

Re: Controlling input. In this interview, Sharon Hurley Hall was asked how she keeps her optimism.
“…one of the ways I do that is by being selective about input, about how I get it, about what I see, what I read.
Because at this point, okay, and as a person, and a black person, right. Racism is not news to me. It has never been news to me…”

We need more livestream cameras on the eaves of homes & buildings. People who have dashcams should be sure to park facing the street so they can film w/out driving if need be. And of course setting up livestream cameras in windows, esp second storey windows, is good, too. Rooftops would work, weather permitting.
We can film them from every angle. Old phones would be great for this, as well as desktop cameras repurposed for witnessing them.
Be creative, folks.

@mekkaokereke basic rule in disaster response: you don't have to work through stuff you didn't see in the first place. Don't look at the body directly, don't touch stuff you don't have to, don't come near the site if you're not immediately required to be there. Stay. The fuck. Away.
Same for these videos.

@mekkaokereke I watched some of it just so that I knew what was happening, and that was enough. There's some of it going on here too.

@mekkaokereke Just to reinforce this point: the video *will* induce a psychological trauma response even if you think you're prepared for it. I saw it, and I'm still feeling the bad feelings hours later.

@mekkaokereke I learned this lesson the hard way years ago, when police violence was just gaining media attention. I felt obligated to watch a video that was circulating, but did not realize it would shatter me so completely.
I didn't need to see the video. I knew what had happened. I was already mobilized. All it did was hurt me so badly I was useless to anyone for a while and periodically for several years after.
Records are important. So is maintaining emotional health to fight another day
