Like, instead of looking at the animal kingdom and saying they are all animals, being able to distinguish between many different species, but for the body : the previous understanding was that our cells had the same genetic code and now the Horizon widens to show a whole new diversity we didn’t know about. i believe it’s the start of a new science.

The science has moved on from the time we called it junk DNA. It’s definitely not junk and we now understand at least some of the reasons it exists. The harms of radiation on humans are well understood. Of course, with high amounts of radiation we would likely evolve mechanisms to handle it, but that takes many generations. That fungus would have had many generations since the Chernobyl disaster happened, but we haven’t. So, you can’t really draw any conclusions about humans from this study.

Abstract Sleep is a fundamental part of our lives; yet, how our brain falls asleep remains one of the most enduring mysteries of neuroscience. Here we report a new conceptual framework to analyze and model this phenomenon. The framework represents the changes in brain electroencephalogram activity during the transition into sleep as a trajectory in a normalized feature space. We use the framework to show that the brain’s wake-to-sleep transition follows bifurcation dynamics with a distinct tipping point preceded by a critical slowing down. We validate the bifurcation dynamics in two independent datasets, which include more than 1,000 human participants. Finally, we demonstrate the framework’s utility by predicting a person’s progression into sleep in real time with seconds temporal resolution and over 0.95 average accuracy.
