    🤣Timely!

    MKBHD just reviewed a Xiaomi SU7.

    Don't hear it from me. Take it from a known Tesla fan.

    And in the question 'Are "we" cooked?' who is "we?" More than 99% of US citizens would benefit from cheaper EVs. And the whole planet would be less "cooked" if we accelerate phasing out fossil fuels.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb6H7trzMfI

    And in terms of "Doesn't have mind blowing features that US cars don't have..." That's true for the Xiaomi.

    But BYD has a car that lets you press a button on the screen that will launch an integrated drone while you are driving. The drone will follow your car.

    You're basically an aircraft carrier.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AK7VwXGjGWo

    Do you need a drone that will follow your car? Do you need 1,500 horsepower? Do you need 25 speakers in your car?

    I'm not sure that the answer to any of these questions is yes.

    But if you take these features out, you can sell EVs for under $18K. That's the magic price point for mass adoption.

      @mekkaokereke And the fact that there's plenty of EV models here that are well under $18,000 sort of suggests that, well, yes. You are cooked.

        @ZDL @mekkaokereke

        German carmakers are scared, too, which is why they are lobbying their politicians so hard for special considerations for ICE vehicles.

          @juergen_hubert @mekkaokereke They should be scared. In almost metric EVs are superior to ICE. They're cheaper, faster, easier to drive. The only area in which ICE vehicles are still superior is range. Oh, and in speed of "recharging".

          Both of those areas of advantage are slowly having their gaps closed. Battery technology is improving (slowly), but quick battery swaps and standardized battery packs are improving quickly. City buses here, for example, swap their battery packs in minutes.

            I basically consider the German car industry to be zombies - they can still sell their stuff in Europe, and maybe in North America and oil rich countries in the Middle East. But their markets will decline terminally.

            So of course, the German government will subsidize them in any way they can, rather than building up new industries. 🙄

              @juergen_hubert @mekkaokereke Why don't your automakers start making decent EVs? BMW and Mercedes' EVs are an embarrassment. Almost as bad as Teslas.

                @ZDL @mekkaokereke

                Basically, some decades ago management in these companies - which like most CEOs at publicly traded German companies were American-trained - started to outsource most aspects of car production other than the chassis and the engine. And now their knowledge of engine production is useless, because electrical engines are much, much easier to make.

                There _are_ a few good electrical vehicles made in Germany, but those who built them had to start new companies from scratch rather than work with existing German carmakers - none of them were interested.
