I would like to finally quit YouTube, which will be significant for me in that I'll be severing my last tie to corporate tech.

but it is really really good to just at LEAST challenge the mindset that we HAVE to do everything on youtube. it reminds me of spotify for mysic in many ways.
also, i don't do any surveilance of my self hosted stuff, but i would HOPE the gender balance on my website and owncast is pretty different from my youtube...
@lislegaard hey, I just checked my yt gender stats and it looks like there's been some affirmative action!

-
@alisynthesis Yep. YT was one of the last things for me to sever. In the end, it wasn't as painful as I thought. Most of the stuff that's interesting to me is on archive.org anyway. And if I do need to go to YT, I just watch the vid within DuckDuckGo viewer, which strips out ads (and doesn't give the creeps any more info about me).
@flockofnazguls great tips and positive reinforcement!

@alisynthesis @inpc @lislegaard
If you are on Firefox or derivative you can do this to make searching that much easier
Lime Bar (@limebar@mastodon.social)
Attached: 3 images #Firefox allows you to add new search engine keywords by right clicking on a search field at a site and picking "add a keyword for this search" #Peertube has a search engine that searches across instances called #SepiaSearch at https://sepiaSearch.org But Firefox creates a broken search when you do this. Fix it by changing the search URL to add "search" between the / and the ? like so: https://sepiasearch.org/search?search=%s Now you can search for videos by typing in the search bar like: pt kittens
Mastodon (mastodon.social)
So you can type in the address bar
"peertube cat videos"
or set it up as
"pt cat videos"
@limebar that's freaking awesome. I'm definitely doing that. Thank you!

@lislegaard (it has always been 100% male when I've looked before.)
-
@tsrono oof, that's exactly what I'm afraid will happen to me!
It would probably be better for me to just watch fewer videos. But DAMN, come on!
@alisynthesis yeahhhhhhh hate to say it but very possible you may run the same as me on that
good news is it's pushing me to just listen to music a bit more which i have already bought thousands of dollars worth of so...got lots of that available already 'sunk cost' (tho i don't look at a purchase as the same as a subscription...not exactly) so i am just watching less videos & haven't been committed to a mental health hospital. yet. lol

good shout. i had google "g" (not my default) and youtube "y" already.
just added "p" for peertube!

@tsrono I think we're all on the doorstep of the mental health hospital at this point. I mean, if we had any, we'd probably all be in there, honestly.

@alisynthesis seriously, anything that can provide temporary respite these days is welcome.
btw i have already found a number of new things on Nebula, so its like there's nothing new there! just not near as wide of a scope as YT obv.

@tsrono that might really work for me. I desperately don't want to see the kinds of things that Google feeds me because I'm susceptible to them. I think I'm going to give it a try!

I would like to finally quit YouTube, which will be significant for me in that I'll be severing my last tie to corporate tech. Yay!
I have a YT channel, but that's not what keeps me on YT. It's about the awesome, bite-sized, high-quality video essays that I enjoy so much. I just can't read books ALL the time, damnit! It serves the same need for me as magazines, but...VIDEO!
I want to explore PeerTube more for sure. Anyone else have suggestions? How about Nebula?
@alisynthesis if you happen to like bookish content (mostly Romantasy), then I have a PeerTube Suggestion for you.
-
@lislegaard (it has always been 100% male when I've looked before.)
too bad it is soo addicting. i have been trying to watch movies and series rather than youtube lately, but it is hard.
let me know how you are doing after a month?
-
#peertube needs a site/app as similar to the YouTube site/app as possible. but make it FOSS and push others to make their own. but people need an example that feels like what they are used to.
@wjmaggos @lislegaard @alisynthesis It is possible to subscribe to PeerTube channels on some alternative apps, such as NewPipe.
Another thing you can do is follow them right here. Which has the advantage that you can like, comment, and share the videos for others to potential follow here too.
Example: @potterybyosa is a channel on the PeerTube instance MakerTube. Which you can see in the name.

@alisynthesis I've also found podcasts to be something of a non Google alternative to YouTube. Even though I'm still watching YouTube a fair bit.

@ChrisWere good point! I'm trying to head more toward audio in general...audiobooks + podcasts are so super good.

@lislegaard totally. I think I love YT mostly because, as silly as "content creators" can be, they're generally just normal people.
It scratches the same itch for me as blogs...I am endlessly fascinated by just hearing about people's lives, in their own words. I love narrative storytelling too, but it has lost some of its luster for me lately, esp. the Hollywood/streaming-type stuff.

@albertocblanco Lay it on me! I'm a book fan, and even though that's not one of my favorite genres, I'm all about learning about what other people do and what they like!

perfect, then it will show up in my rss reader
