@Mrfunkedude So what are the alternatives for those who use Discord for paying voice/video table top role playing games (ttrpgs)?
@c_merriweather Honestly, I don't think there is a direct 1 to 1 replacement. You can find chat's that have some of the features, but no one has all of them.
I prefer Matrix.org because that's what I have the most experience in. It lacks good admin tools and there can be an on-boarding difficulty for some, but mostly it does the job that I need it to.
Of course your mileage may vary.

@Mrfunkedude I used to have my public chat https://matrix.to/#/#politipet:matrix.org showing on my Masto profile, similarly to you, and eventually removed it for lack of success. It seemed to me that people on Masto (at least the ones following me) did not give a damn about Matrix, except 2 guys.
@Mrfunkedude it also seemed to me that convincing a Fedi user to even just try Matrix was really not a piece of cake.

@politipet I've never really had a problem. I just invite and people who want to show up. If they don't, then they don't.

Kinene Jitsi meet is a Zoom replace type thing so there’s that.
Although it isn’t really a space with chat rooms and such, you could set up a vdo.ninja room. You can save how everyone’s video displays and no one even has to sign up for anything. It’s all just URL’s. You could easily set up multiple video feeds and switch between them if you have different maps or images to show .

@TWDickson I don't use it so I haven't been paying super close attention, but theyrl're now (or soon to be) requiring face scans/government ID to use it.
@me @TWDickson Found this: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1d67vdlk1ko
Seems that verification is only required for adult content.

Each one of them responded with contact info. They were leaving as well.

@Mrfunkedude I am a bit behind! My server does not yet have a chat client!
-
@politipet I put out a couple of posts each week telling people about the chat. Currently there are 58 people who pop in and out but about 10 that are regulars.
I advertise both as needed to different groups.
I haven’t dipped into matrix anything at all. And I think if you’ve ever spoken on that environment, I’d love a link or if you haven’t think of it is a topic idea!

@politipet @Mrfunkedude ...and here I've been chilling on XMPP this whole time.
`/away "whats this hubub?"`
<looks up from IRC>
huh? oh. waiting for that to happen

@calvin The groups I am in are focused around particular ttrpgs, or game campaigns. I'm not there for social commentary.

@Mrfunkedude New side job: setting up and maintaining Discord-equivalent services for local people who need them.

Kinene oh sorry maybe I misunderstood your question. I just figured I’d suggest some alternatives to Discord, at least regarding video conferencing stuff.

@c_merriweather @calvin there's roll20.net, foundry vtt, talespire... literally a dozen different options at whatever price you can manage.

I'm going to wait a bit, I know the policy is not changing. But want to wait closer to "just" before I'm not able to login again, then pull the rug.

@Mrfunkedude Failed to even be able to log in to either Discord or Matrix, but then I was rejected from Eton prep school as too stupid also! There may be some kind of message here.
