    @briankrebs So, basically, they don't want any visitors, any international witnesses or observers, for whatever they have planned for us, after they lock us all in?!?

    @kimlockhartga @briankrebs

    It seems there's _always_ something else at play, some other 'plan' underneath and behind whatever it is that's stated at face value, so this makes sense in that context.

    Being in control isn't one directional, it's about every direction all at once, and when there's a built-in byproduct in some 'new rule' to guarantee even more control, they'll use it, exploit it, and look for another dozen offshoots to cement even more control.

      @briankrebs I wish people understood how important the Federal Register is to how law is made. The government has to consider comments and if they fail to consider them seriously you can sue to block a regulation. The more people who comment with serious objections to a rule, the harder it is for the government to implement that rule. It’s an under appreciated avenue for direct democracy and direct action. If there’s an issue you care about, you can follow that on the FR

      Sure, but we can all see that this administration completely ignores the law.

      Of course, people should submit their concerns.

          We knew this was coming, but now the clock is running. From Privacy International:

          "Yesterday the Trump Administration announced a proposed change in policy for travellers to the U.S. It applies to the powers of data collection by the Customs and Border Police (CBP)."

          "If the proposed changes are adopted after the 60-day consultation, then millions of travellers to the U.S. will be forced to use a U.S. government mobile phone app, submit their social media from the last five years and email addresses used in the last ten years, including of family members. They’re also proposing the collection of DNA."

          PI linked to and summarized a Federal Register entry describing the proposed requirements:

          -All visitors must submit ‘their social media from the last 5 years’

          -ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) applications will include ‘high value data fields’, ‘when feasible’
          ‘telephone numbers used in the last five years’
          -‘email addresses used in the last ten years’
          -‘family number telephone numbers (sic) used in the last five years’
          -biometrics – face, fingerprint, DNA, and iris
          -business telephone numbers used in the last five years
          -business email addresses used in the last ten years.

                    @briankrebs
                    “Government agencies will likely need to get deep-level access to all social media platforms to gather social media intelligence. Of course they could scrape the content for each social media account for each visitor’s application. It’s more likely they’ll seek direct access to the platforms’ databases, or use third-party firms who can do this for them.”

                                It's almost as if all that hero-worshipping of North Korea in Trump's first term of office led him to decide to close the US border and only allow the US citizens he's deporting out and Nigel Farage in.

                                  @lumiworx @briankrebs correct. A squeezing, like from a python.

                                  I have tried to tell people that walls keep people in just as effectively as they keep people out. Control is, as you say, the key.

                                        @AAKL @briankrebs If the German football federation decides to either boycott the WC entirely or boycott matches in the US the rest of Europe will do the same. Mexico and Canada can handle the extra matches and tourists. FIFA can adjust quickly to cut the US out. The US matches will have low ranked teams playing in near empty stadiums.

                                          It's Palantir and other AI tech bros who are data hungry for more data-inaccessible correlations

                                          Intelligence agencies hope for intel.

                                          Politicians hope for leverage against any and all

                                          The US wants to chose their politicians in any nation by manufacturing consent with AI and micromanagement.

                                          This is neither Trump nor Miller ... ok somewhat MIller
                                          ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
