      I feel like the fact that Ubuntu used to be the recommended starting distro is coming to bite people because they just install Ubuntu without realizing that most people don’t really recommend starting with it anymore and install it, then complain

          @sayonaraminasan@urusai.social Kinda depends, most of the time I see people recommend Linux Mint a lot for getting a close-to-windows experience. I started with Fedora and I really liked it. Also for gaming specifically there are distros like Bazzite that I’ve seen good things about but don’t know for sure.

          I’ve also heard a lot about PopOS but I don’t know much about it.

            @robustjumprope

            They complain about dual-booting. Somehow Linux is always expected to make this perfect when sitting next to an OS (Windows) that is not expected to, and often, does terrible things in that realm. Linux did not delete my boot entries on some updates, for example. It also doesn't mount my linux drives. nor is it seemingly expected to. macOS ... just doesn't do dualbooting, period.

            Nathan had his own bizarre problems where his CachyOS refused to acknowledge his mouse clicks. He was also hit with option paralysis, trying to choose between four bootloaders and thirteen desktop environments.
            ...They intentionally installed a distro that is about tweaks and customization, and that's a bad thing?

            Almost all the complaints here are about hardware. Which ... yeah, I get. That's also something that Linux is somewhat hamstringed in fixing.

              @robustjumprope @sayonaraminasan@urusai.social Pop!_OS would be my recommendation. It's configured for laptops, and it walks back some of the annoying things about modern Ubuntu. The only downside is you are stuck on an ubuntu LTS for the base.

              But I also think Fedora is cool. That's what I had on my work laptop before they changed policies.
