@equilibrium@urusai.social On mastodon, you should see a box that says something like "Public". This is the post visibility. If you change that to "Specific People", that Is basically a DM, if my mastodon is correct. You'll then see these messages in the "Private Mentions".

@equilibrium@urusai.social You do not need to create an account on each instance. I'm on sakurajima.social, a Sharkey instance, and you're on Urusai.social, a Mastodon-glitch instance, and we're able to mutually follow and interact with each other. The whole point of the fediverse is that we're able to be on these small internet communities and still interact other communities with the same account.
Imagine it like inter-connected islands.
TL;DR: You can follow and interact with anyone on any instance your instance does not globally block. No multiple-accounts needed. -

@NullNowhere also, what is Sharkey instance and Mastodon-glitch instance?
@equilibrium@urusai.social the Fediverse is based on a communication standard called ActivityPub that anyone can use. So, there are multiple different softwares that instances (sites) use. These have different features but their users can all interact.
Sharkey is a fork (copied and modified) version of another software called “Misskey”. It adds more features to Misskey. Mastodon-Glitch is the same idea. It’s a fork of Mastodon that adds more features ontop of mastodon. -

@equilibrium@urusai.social don’t sweat it. Some people hop around locations or use specific accounts for specific interests. Others just park them.
there’s no harm.
