    Sometime in the very early 90s, when I first tried to learn to GM, I was running a Shadowrun 1e module that said, and I quote, "When the PCs run..."

    I doubled what the module threw at them, and they mowed it all down. I did finally get them to move on, in a lull when Lone Star was sending in more equipment, but it was very much Not Running.

    I still game with that group. Sometimes, when a GM plan goes south, we say, "When the PCs run..." and laugh our asses off.

      I have figured out that they will move on, so long as they have already won fight, but they pretty much won't leave the field until then.

          @DejahEntendu I was fortunate that one of my first editors, Robin Jenkins, had done a good stint at TSR before he came to Avalon Hill, and was very good at catching those times when I'd be so narrow minded as to dare predict what the PCs would do. 😂

          And he repeatedly slapped me around the head for it, because at first I did it a lot.

            Right? This is why I don't do modules any longer.

              @SJohnRoss
              The GM I've gamed with most has often said that he could plan for 12 different things the group would do, and on game night we'd pick number 13. Luckily, the lesson he taught me was plan but be flexible. I figured out that to be flexible, you need to know what the adversaries are thinking, not what they're going to do. And have irons in the fire. 😀

                @DejahEntendu Exactly so. In fact, that's literally, pretty much verbatim, my adventure-design philosophy: prepare for 12 with the understanding that the PCs will create the 13th!

                And yeah, if you understand your NPCs ... that's kind of everything.

                  @DejahEntendu Descent from Avernus from 2019 starts by having an unpleasant character give them a job. If they refuse, his goons beat them up until they agree. If they beat up the goons, he sends more until they agree. Top game writing for the biggest RPG company.

                    They're still writing things like that. We got railroaded into taking a job in the current one. Dunno which module it is tho.
